Trouble formatting USB stick, although can read-access

I have an 8Gb memory stick that appears to be corrupted. I can read stuff from it okay, but cannot write or delete files.

When I try to reformat it in GParted, it tries to do it, takes ages then comes up with an error. When I re-examine the stick, it has not touched or deleted any of the files during its "reformat".

Doing "sudo fdisk -l /dev/sdb" brings up the usual display, with no indication of any problem.

Is there anything I can do to reformat this thing, remove the "corruption" and make the stick usable again? It mounts and reads the existing content okay. Could it be read-only in some way - even when GParted is running as root - and how can I get round this?

Thank you for any help you can give.

Steve

SteveW,

I had a similar problem.

Post #11 should help you to tell whether the USB drive is faulty:
