SoundCard loaded and showing, sound however still does not work

I am using a xps laptop, dual boot xubuntu and windows
Windows has recently failed me and its not letting me boot windows, so I wanna listen to music using linux.. or atleast videos or have sound.

Now my soundcard was not working before and after windows stopped working, so that is a independent event.

I did look at the post, what to post when posting, however the commands did not work so, please help me :D Just let me know what you need and Ill answer any questions you have so that I can get some sound!!!

Thank!!

Turn off pulseaudio and artsd. Also set the sound server to ALSA which is a lot better than those and it is the main one.

Install Mplayer and type in the following command in terminal.

mplayer -v -identify -ao alsa,oss file

Pick any media file for in place of file.

Use the following command to adjust your sound card while the file is playing back.

alsamixer -V all

Keep adjusting until you get the sound. If you tried all settings and you still do not get sound, try using headphones. If you tried using headphones, it could the hardware is trashed.

I said to install mplayer, but you got a hint how to install it. It should have been straight forward from there on how to install it. Also when you ran it, you copy letter by letter. I stated clearly to place in any media file for file.

Your distribution has documentation how to do tasks like disable services. Read the documentation to help you to turn off services like PulseAudio and ARTSD.

I am not going to help you any further because Linux is a DIY operating system. There is documentation on Linux and how to do several tasks in it. If you do not use them and ask for me to do all the work for you, you will not learn anything. At this time you are acting dumb just to get help.

1. I dont know how to install it, it may be straight-forward to you, but for some who has to linux instead of windows because windows is broken, i am just temporarily trying to learn linux and just get it set up, im not looking to learn. If you read my first post you would see that.. so who is acting dumb now??
Ya i coped it letter for letter, i thought u were helping me, not calling me dumb and not helping at all. If i wanted that id go elsewhere, im pretty sure this is a linux question blog.. therefore i thought I would get help... \
My distribution?
How would u know how i got it?? huh?? you dont.. exactly, i had it installed, so i never did it myself..
Ok again, im not acting dumb, i just dont know it!! and i dont want to learn!! like many computer users of today... I just want it fixed and things to happen word for word.. So seriously stop raging on a help forum.. it makes YOU look silly..

Electro*;

Please lighten up---above is unnecessarily harsh treament of a newbie.

kwsnow;
Have you installed mplayer? In addition to the "apt-get" method, you can also use the GUI package manager (Synaptic or Adept, as I recall)

Well, you may need to be willing to do **some** learning if you want a working Linux system.

the thing that many people do not realize is that setting up a Linux system is actually faster and easier than the equivalent Windows system
