Scanners and ADSL in RH 8
Two Prob's:
1. Anyone know how I install a scanner in RH 8.0? sane reports that no hardware is found. I'm trying to run a UMAX Astra 600P on RH 8.0 2. A USB ADSL modem . I know this sounds dumb, but I'm not quite sure how to install it. any help appreciated.. NGraphiX |
the scanner is not supported ye, and probably never will, as it's parallel port based.
modem... is there not an ethernet connection on it? it's SO SO much easier to jsut use ehternet if possible. |
no, no ethernet port.
the modem is connected to the wall jack and then to the USB. The RH config assumes I'm connecting through a ethernet card, but as said, I'm not. any way I can configure it manually? (i.e back to ye olde command promt) Thanks again , NGraphiX |
USB DSL: Plug it in and at least see if it's recognized.. There's hope if so at least...
# tail -f /var/log/messages and then plug it in and see what new messages appear when you do. USB for networking? Bleh! |
Thanks I'll try ..
But back to the scanner can't you get some adapter? also how much effort is it to actually write a driver? (or should I just shell out 200$ and get a new one) Just seems a waste to throw out a perfectly good scanner.. P.S windows ME dosn't have with drivers either.. |
You have to get specific drivers for your modem.
I'm working with a Eicon ADSL USB modem and now I don't have any problems after installing the last drivers from www.prout.be/eicon Look at the vendor's website if it has any drivers for your modem, because USB ADSL modems are not supported in Linux Greetings |

The output is here: [dmitry@localhost dmitry]$ startmodem which: no eci-load1 in (/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin) test : /usr/local/bin/eci-load1 which: no eci-load2 in (/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin) Init modem ... Best regards, d |
Hm... I plugged the USB cable in and out and then startmodem worked as usual (but only as root).
How to make it work without having to crawl under the desk in order to plug in and out the USB cable? How to make it available for other users (not only root)? Rgds, d |
How do I disconnect the modem (stopmodem would be a logical alternative to starmodem, but it doesn't work)
 |
Diva Eicon USB ADSL modem works fine. Thanks to Gerardo.
