Redhat Enterprise WS 2.1 and SATA

Does SATA run under Redhat Enterprise WS 2.1 ?

If you are using an updated kernel, you should find SATA drives supported.

I am using SATA drives on a RHEWS 3.1 installation.

Thanks i am new to Linux.
I was not sure if i could install new copy of RHELWS 2.1 on new SATA drives?
WS 2.1 i think is Kernel is 2.4.9 i know that the 2.1 release update 3 can take SATA.
I guess you done it previously?.

Installation will be problematical. You would be better off using RHELWS3, or one of the clones like whitebox (http://www.whiteboxlinux.org/).

We are trying to run an GIS application called landmark this only is certfied to work in WS 2.1.
I would chose WS 3 if the application was entirely certified.
I would like to thank for your help. Cheers

Here is a suggestion for how to shoehorn your RHEWS2.1 into a SATA drive.

0) Install on your hardware, but using an IDE drive.
1) Update to the latest kernel and verify that it recognizes SATA hardware (if it doesn't, declare victory and move on)
2) Archive your installation using SystemImager (http://www.systemimager.org/)
3) Tweak your archived image:
a) change any /dev entries is /etc/fstab to use your SATA device
b) change your /etc/lilo.conf file /dev entries to point to your SATA device (not familiar with what you need to do if you use grub)
4) Tweak the SystemImager installation script so that it installs on your SATA device (the script will have entries for partitioning, and formatting, and initializing your boot loader - plus the latest version tries to rebuild /etc/fstab)
5) Install to your hardware with your SATA drive installed from the SystemImager archive.

Hello Idaho,

From your last post I imagine one can eventually get RHEWS2.1 running into a SATA drive. I'm about to purchase a new system, with SATA drives, and I'd like to install a fresh RHEWS3. My question is: how straightforward is that? After I get a brand new RHEWS3 subscription do I need anythnig else before trying to install it on SATA (for instance, you mention version 3.1, but RH site shows only RHEWS3). Any recommendations about the best Mobos and RAID/SATA controller cards that must be supported by RHEWS3? I'm intending to buy an Athlon 3000 XP (but I could go Intel as well) with 2 GB RAM, and Radeon 9200 256MB.

I'd appreciate to have your inputs on those issues.

Thanks,

413x:

Sorry, but I am not a hardware guru.

I installed a boxed installation set of RHProWS which is the RHEWS CDs without the RHEL support package. I installed on Dell Optiplex gx270 with Dell provided SATA drives. I tested several distributions on this hardware, and the only problem I had with the SATA drives was when the installation CDs were built with a boot kernel that was not SATA aware.

A way to test RHEL without paying up front is to install WhiteBox - an exact clone of RHEWS, except for RedHat's copyrighted material:
