the question is the gargon that is being used here, is USB key the same thing as a USB Stick?

According to Wikipedia, yes. Here's their list of synonyms.

Personally, I'd say the key thing about BIOS flashing is never to do it unless absolutely unavoidable!

flashing BIOS in linux when the other flash options are windows programs?

Generally it isn't a great idea to flash bios unless the change log for it has a direct relationship to your problem. Don't do it just because....ever. As you can see it uses FreeDOS so you don't have to mess with linux.

Sounds like they offer a way to make a flash dive.
If you wish to use a usb stick or usb flash drive then consider trying Rufus maybe if official way doesn't work. It may be possible to use ultimate boot cd also on a flash drive.

Thanks for the solution and update.

I'll ask... what could be a usb stick if it wasn't a usb flash?

Jokingly it could be a branch cut to fit the usb port.
