Problems with serial to usb adapter

Hi, I'm having a problem linking my serial to usb adapter . I can see the device when I type lsusb in the terminal , but when I connect , nothing happens , I have two adapters one with a prolific chipset and the other with a ftdi chipset. I believe the ftdi will work but for some reason nothing is happening. I'm using a dell lattitude c640 laptop with xbuntu on it. I'm new to the Linux world ( aprox 1 yr of use still in the learning curve). All help will begreatly appreciated.

Can you post the output of 'lsusb'?

Also, immediately after plugging it in, you should be able to tail the /var/log/messages file, or dmesg to see some info regarding the device. Can you post that output as well?

In addition what version of xbuntu are you running? What do you mean by nothing is happening. What are you trying to accomplish.

Both devices should be automatically recognised and device IDs created i.e. /dev/ttyUSB0 and /dev/ttyUSB1.

The output is :

ch@ch-Latitude-C640:~$ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0403:6001 Future Technology Devices International, Ltd FT232 USB-Serial (UART) IC
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
ch@ch-Latitude-C640:~$

The version of Xbuntu is 13.10

What im trying to do is link my megasquirt controller(stand alone programable engine computer) to the computer (xbuntu) using software tunerstudio(which is used to tune the megasquirt computer) it just wont connect but does using windows , to me it seems like a driver issue .

Did you check to see of a /dev/ttyUSB0 was created? Did you check the output of dmesg or the messages file to see if the device is recognised?

Maybe a device permission problem. Check to see if your user has R/W permissions to /dev/ttyUSB0.

Unplug and plug the adapter back in. In a terminal window type the command
dmesg and look as the last few lines.
