Printing from Mandrake 10 to W2K Pro

Another MS convert. I have a home network running 6 PCs. An Enpson Stylus C64 is connected to a W2K Pro PC. All FC1 (K12LTSP) terminals including the server itself can print to the printer. The K12LTSP is the DHCP server. I have just Installed Mandrake 10 on another PC and it takes all its IP address details from the K12LTSP FC1 machine. I can see that the printer is installed in Mandrake. When I send a print job from Mandrake to the Epson printer, it seems to go tru the motions but no output at the printer and no error messages. The job just quitely dissapears into nowhere. I have rebooted (coming from a windows background - bear with me we always do that) the mandrake pc a couple of times, cheked to make sure cups and smb are is running. Still no paper output. Any suggestions much appreciated.

Hi Peacedog,

Did check and installed the gimp drivers this evening, but no joy. Cannot see the rest of this thread so cannot quote where you wanted me to look at. But the directory contains about 21 lines. Do you want me to copy and paste? Please tell me where you want me to look at again. I saw it last night but have forgotten.

Regards

Peacedog 08-31-2004 06:45 PM

it's the log file, here

/var/log/cups/error_log

on another note, after installing the drivers, did you restart the cups server?

Still got the problem. Can anyone help. Just noticed that e-mails sent on the same Mandrake 10.0 PC though says sent, also disappears into thin air like the print jobs. I do not get even test emails sent to myself on the Mandra10 system. The Fedora Core 1 K12LTSP system is ok. Mails and print jobs sent, get to their destination. On the Mandrake, goes through the motions, but no results. Can anyone help.

Is there anyone out there?

Still cannot print nor send e-mail with my Mandrake 10 PC. I can recieve e-mals. When I send an email (I am using Thunderbird) it says mail successfully sent, but no mail is recieved by the recipient including myself. Printer is an Epson Stylus C64 on a W2K Pro PC. It is also my dial up server. The printer is shared out on the W2K PC. I can print to it from Fedora Core1 and send / recieve emails. But on Mandrake 10, neither work. I can get on the Internet on the Mandrake 10 PC. In Mandrakelinux Printer Management Tool 0.1, it lists the printer as "Epson" under Printer Name. It lists "server.ltsp" as the server name. Says "created by redhat-config-printer 0.6.x" under description and "location uknown" under location.

Summary of problem; I cannot print nor send e-mail via W2K using Mandrake 10. What is wrong? Can anyone help?

Peacedog, thought you were helping me out on this, but its gone all quite on the western front for a while now.

Per the LQ Rules, please do not bump your own thread until at least 24 hours have elapsed without a reply. Because the LQ membership is global, people in other time zones may not have seen this post yet, and thus it may take some time before a response is received.

idduke - I'm sorry that you're encountering problems with this, but please keep in mind that everyone here is a volunteer, trying to help out other Linux users in their spare time. If you are under the impression that by replying to one of your posts that a fellow LQ member is thereby accepting responsibility for solving the problem you report, unfortunately that's not how things work. While I know how frustrating it can be, and I'm sorry I don't have any advice to offer on how to solve it myself, please don't vent your frustrations by making critical comments of Peacedog or any other member. That is neither welcome nor appropriate, and I ask that you refrain from implying that either LQ or any individual LQ member is letting you down or otherwise failing you in some way just because you do not get responses quickly enough for your liking.

If solving this issue truly is an urgent matter, please seek out the services of a paid, professional Linux consulting agency. It may be worth reiterating that there are no guarantees that every question that gets asked here at LQ will be fully and completely solved to the original poster's satisfaction, nor does posting a question here create the obligation on any individual LQ member to resolve it. As I said, every person here at LQ is just a volunteer, doing their best in their spare time, and while many if not most of the questions are successfully resolved, there are no guarantees. I do hope that a successful resolution will be achieved, but ultimately the responsibility for solving a problem rests with you. -- J.W.

JW, Peacedog,

My most sincere apologies. I wasn't been critical nor unappreciative. I know that people like yourselves are volunteers. No offence nor annoyance nor unappreciation was intended and if my latest posting gave that impression, I am trully and really sorry. I see such forums (I belong to two others) as a community of like minds and would not do any good to disrespect a fellow community member in any way.

I know that I own some responsibilities towards solving the problem myself and believe me I have tried. I have done loads of google search with no solutions. If I can be directed as to what documentations to read up on, I will gladly do that.

Once again, please accept my apologies if the postin came accross as crass.

idduke -- thanks for understanding, and I appreciate you posting back. As I indicated, I unfortunately have no solid advice to offer that I think would be applicable to your situation. In my setup, I just have a single printer connected to my machine, and the key online resource that I found to be of use (apart from LQ of course) was LinuxPrinting.org There is quite a bit of info at that site, plus doing Searches of the archives here at LQ can be a gold mine.

Good luck with it - there are many very knowledgable people here, and hopefully a solution will be found soon. -- J.W.

BTW -- Welcome to LQ, idduke

Hello there.

Can you please put in here or send me your cups conf file (.conf) so I can take a look inside and see what's happening. It may be something as silly as a wrong value or a commented line.

Thanks :)

idduke 09-06-2004 03:34 PM

Hi DigiGato,

Where will I find it? i.e cups.conf.

Regards

DigiGato 09-06-2004 03:57 PM

Hello idDuke :)

It seems your file can be found at
/etc/cups/cupsd.conf

(as it reads in your log file)
[30/Aug/2004:01:07:32 +0100] Loaded configuration file "/etc/cups/cupsd.conf"]

Thanks a lot :D
