Mandrake 9.2: Installed Alsa, now no sound. Infamous nVidia nForce1.
 

All right. In trying to solve one problem, it seems I've gone back to square one.

I'm running Mandrake 9.2 with KDE 3.1(the 9.2 release version), I am running the 2.4.22-10mdkenterprise kernel. This installation is about 4 months old. After installation, I had sound as Mandrake automatically updated to this kernel because of my chipset, the infamous and notorious NVidia Nforce2 chipset. I was able to do many things, except set default startup volume. Myself being the purist that I am found this unacceptable. I read in many places that I should install ALSA so that I have full functionality. I figured what the heck.

I followed the procedure exactly as listed at:

I adjusted the volumes as recommended through AlsaMixer. When I went to save with AlsaCtrl, I found that it is missing. After an extensive search, I have come to the conclusion that it is not installed on my computer. I installed Aumix to see if it would let me adjust volumes, but everytime I try to move the main "PCM" volume slider from 0 to 100, it moves, by itself, back to 0. KMix is of no help, although I now have more channels than I did previously. I just now have no sound what-so-ever.

I've read in several places that in order to have AlsaCtrl, I have to install Alsa Tools, but the tools package that is on their website does not appear to contain this.

My main questions are:
1. How do I get Alsa up and running from here?
2. Do I need to uninstall and reinstall alsa? If so, how is that done with a tar.bz2 package?
3. How can I get AlsaCtrl and Alsaconfig installed?
4. If I can't get it up and running properly, how do I go back to the setup I had previously, so that I at least have 90% satisfaction?

Any information you have on this would be greatly appreciated and I thank you in advance.

do not feel alone...i have the same problems....been working on it for weeks
downloaded the alsa driver from asus (from whence i got my motherboard)
followed instructions to the tee...still nothing..i joined ur thread to c if u get some answers...if i get one i'll get back to u....

Damn...everythings working on my linux box but sound...

did an lsmod...all the snd drivers are oss...it's like i never installed alsa..

i'm starting to think that the old drivers should have been deleted first

linux is a learning process...lol...i'm learning alot while trying to configure....

I actually have good news:
I know now that it is "alsactl" and NOT "alsactrl" and that I do, indeed, have it installed. I also plugged a mic into my mic port and I have sound so I know the driver is working. Now If I could just get the damned PCM Volume up.

This was the basic procedure:

I went into Mandrake Control Center> Hardware> Hardrake> nForce Audio Codec Interface> Run Config Tool Button(draksound), and made sure "ALSA" snd-intel8x0 was selected as the driver.


I made sure that the module was loaded with in root console:
modprobe snd-intel8x0


I made sure my modules.conf had it loading properly, it looks like this (only the sound info shown):

I turned up all my volumes, and plugged in a mic and had sound. Then stored the settings.
I ran in root console:

Now if I can just get my PCM Volume to budge I will be ready to rock.
Anyone know how to get the PCM Volume to budge?

Yeah mic ports aren't all that great, but desperate times call for desperate measures. lol
And no, I didn't delete the original oss drivers, I installed over them (smart? i don't know).

I just want to turn my PCM volume up is that too much to ask? :scratch: lol

Pokin around once again and I'm getting the feeling that something isn't installed right. I keep getting this error message when I run KMIX and I'm wondering if there is something that can be done:

if your using Manrake 9.2 you have to install Kmix with RPMdrak...
go into config --> software installation --> hit the button for looking at individual packages, not groups...then do a search for "Kmix"
it installs pretty easy..and if your computer is having a problem with the sound card...the Kmix window will be empty after the install

What happens when you run "alsamixer" - and remember that linux is case sensitive.
I have a nforce2 mobo and my sound is working fine.

When I run alsamixer, I am able to graphically adjust all volumes and and store these settings with alsactl. It gives me no error messages whatsoever. Kmix seems to reflect these settings and I have yet to try Tom's suggestion. I'll let you know how that goes. Also, should I have arts running by default, or should it be disabled?

Check the sound device permissions.

How do I do that exactly? I'm learning more and more, but permissions still have me confused.

Have a look at "man chmod" for information on changing permissions, the devices you want to check are /dev/dsp*, /dev/midi*, /dev/mixer*, /dev/sequencer* and the device files in /dev/snd/.

i am having problems with the spdif not working all the time... by that I mean it works find with th xmms player doing mp3's or whatever... but it doesn't work for the "desktop sounds" or with Unreal 2004.... my mic also is working fine but again.. not in unreal.

And sorry... I am also a noob to this.

chmod a+rw

when my network goes down ( i use acpi and alsa also), 3com Vortex/Boomerang in inspiron 8200 and xircom parent (ethernet and modem, configured but not used) inserted in cardbus/pcmcia adapter i get that error. without the xircom inserted, no prob...

heard its related to printer stuff, the message occurs directly after the parallel printer module...hmmmmmmmm

maybe not of much help but try it out, i get ratchety sound sometimes also

have u tried amixer --help to try to set the volumes
volumes muted by default, may work in x, but not in console...that was my experience

Although the "lr-xr-xr-x" still seems to be missing the "w"s (I assume this means write permissions). I used chmod 666 and it changed everything else. Kmix still gives me the error and my pcm volume is still stuck and won't budge. Maybe there are more permissions that need to be changed?

BTW: Outabux: I've never had to worry about the spurious IRQ 7. It doesn't seem to effect printing or networking for me. amixer has also failed me. lol

That all looks ok, now check if your user is part of the 'audio' group, and post the output of "lspci -vv"that mentions your Multimedia audio controller.

Nevermind. Found it....... still haven't fixed the lspci error though.

KDE has KUser for adjusting/adding users, both it and lspci have to be run as root, KUser will prompt you for the root password when you run it, but lspci has to be done in the console as root, eg;

lspci is no where to be found on my installation. Does it come as a part of any particular package? Maybe it wasn't installed during the initial installation.

It's part of pciutils, and you really should have it installed.

Turns out that PCIUtils is not installed to Mandy 9.2 by default. Easy enough to install though. Here's the ouput from "lspci -vv":

Have you ever tried the nvaudio module on this board?

That's the thing...... I'm not really sure. I'm not sure what kind of MOBO it is. I think it's an AMI(?). It's an Athlon 1800+, that I got from a friend who didn't want it. I BELIEVE it is an nForce2, but I have no way of being certain. This MOBO has no identifying markings (that I'm aware of). The nvaudio module does not seem to work for this chipset. Could all of this be because I'm using Mandrake? You (and everyone else who uses Slackware) seem to have the most compatible distro. Mandy has only ever given me headaches and I'm always fixing something.

I'm going to open my linux box and see if I can't find a serial number or something.

It's an MSI board of some sort, probably an nforce1 (which had a few problems when they first came out - not that yours is one of these but you never know). If we can ID the board model we can check for any BIOS updates that may help with your hardware problems, also booting a live linux cd like knoppix and seeing if the audio works will rule mandy in or out as the culprit.

OK...... I look at the only nVidia chip on the board and it says "nForce" not "nForce2." Apparently I've been trying to make a square peg fit in a round hole. lol So how do I get the nForce1 up and running?

In theory it's exactly the same as nforce2..........
We need to ID your mainboard and check to see if it has any "issues", somewhere on the pcb there should be a model number and revision, they are often near the pci slots.
Also, you should go into the bios setup and double check all audio settings.

I'm down but not out. I removed the CMOS battery, set the CMOS Jumper to erase, and pulled the plug and let it sit for a while. I can get a boot screen, but when I try to set bios settings, it hangs and I have to erase all over again. But there is hope. I'm going to try to reflash and hopefully everything will be cool.
