How do I get an LG dvd burner to be recognized in Ubuntu (and/or LMDE)?

I cannot get Ubuntu (or linux mint debian edition) to recognize my external DVD drive (an LG GP65NB60). It was manufactured last year, has the latest available firmware from LG and works fine in Windows. I am using Ubuntu 24.04 kernel 6.8.0-31-generic. I am at a total loss and don't know how to proceed. lsusb doesn't show anything indicating that it recognizes that this device is connected to the PC. Using it in Ubuntu is my priority as that is the PC I use most frequently.

A quick disclaimer that I also asked this question on AskUbuntu.com and I hope I didn't break any rules by posting here as well. If I receive a response I will update this post.

Welcome to LinuxQuestions.

Is Ubuntu or LMDE running on the same computer as Windows?
If not, what is the make/model of the PC running Ubuntu or LMDE?

As far as I know there is nothing special needed for linux to support the drive but if this computer does not have enough power to run the drive then you need to get a Y adapter cable.

What does dmesg show when you plug in the dvd drive?

I have a LG BP50NB40. My system recognizes it no problem. It works fine when plugged into a USB 3.0 port. It also came with a Y cable for USB 2.0 ports.

The link below has several methods listed/explained which you can use to try to get information on the DVD drive. You might try them to see if you get any output.

For whatever reason the B60 isn't recognized, it would be interesting to try a B40 and see if that model works.
