Can you recommend a graphics card?
 

I have a video capture card that I can't get working wtih Linux: see http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...91#post1479891

If I can't get it to work properly, I may be able to get a new card. Can anyone recommend a graphics card compatible with Linux that has an S-Video Input feature for analogue video?

I am thinking of the Nvidia GeForce FX Personal Cinema 5200... what do you think?

personally i'd suggest not combining video inputand output. buy things that do one thing well. nvidia cards work great for output, but i'd wonder how well the more advanced capture parts work, as the drivers won't be available in the GPL world for full developement with other applications.

i'd say find a tv card, like a hauppage wintvgo that is based on the bt878 chipset, or a newer saa7124 or cx88 drivers / chipsets. these will work fine.

remember that it's not about brand names here, but well supported chipsets underneath it all. sure a crappy manufacturer can implement a great chip very poorly, but on the whole, care about the chips not the name on the box.

I've got Hauppage win tvgo; it works fine with Linux. It's just that I need the S-video in for capturing video from an analogue video camcorder, and I don't believe it can do it.

I was going to say what acid_kewpie have said after I did some research of the video capture device that you mention. Unfortunately Pinnacle has froze my web browser from the flash animations. The video capture cards based on SAA713x gives out very good video quality and sound quality. I have a LifeView FlyVideo 3000FM that works with out any problems though I had to upgrade to 2.6.10 because of buggy V4L modules in 2.4.x.

If you want better video and sound quality, use Firewire and a DV camcorder. Get firewire card that is based on Texas Instruments chip.

Hauppauge WinTV GO cards do not have an S-Video connector. The DBX models do.

Your right. It does have an S-video type thing. I'll try capturing video from my camcorder with it tomorrow. Do you capture video that way?

Do you happen to know if the ATI cards are any better, though, with Linux? Such as the Radeon 9600XT AGP?

And I know that DV camcorders are better, but I have a truck load of old analogue video that desperately requires digital conversion before it becomes totally obsolete.

Some DV camcorders has a feature that can pass analog signal (Composite or S-Video) to digital (firewire) on a fly.

Really? Does that mean that I could transfer analogue video from an analogue camcorder directly to a DV camcorder? Is the Linux support for DV camcorder video input quite good?

I have tried video capture with my WinTV card and it works!
Took a while to get it set up, though, and I am a little concerned that the video size/resolution at which it captures is too small, particularly if there is a need for me to burn it to DVD, as I was thinking.

Now what I need is some video editing software. Cinelerra doesn't work; too much for my PC to cope. Kino is only for DV editing. LVS doesn't want to import external movie files. Anyone had experience with Kdenlive?
