linux for ppc and x86

im guessing this is true, but...

i have gentoo linux for my PowerBook(PPC), do i need to get speical version of linux programs that work w/ PPC, like they have to say 'works w/ ppc linux'. i cant just get ones that work w/ redhat, suse, etc... rite?

You will need RPM's that were compiled for ppc (or ppc64 if you have a 64 bit processor). I know that ppc64 rpms are available. I have used SuSE SLES 8 on PPC for years and loved it! I know that SuSE makes a ppc version of their professional Linux (the free one). I think that version 9.1 is going to be available soon. I am using 9.1 on Intel and love it.

(In my personal opinion, the PowerPC chip is far superior to the Intel chip set.)
