linux for ppc and x86


im guessing this is true, but...

i have gentoo linux for my PowerBook(PPC), do i need to get speical version of linux programs that work w/ PPC, like they have to say 'works w/ ppc linux'. i cant just get ones that work w/ redhat, suse, etc... rite?

You will need RPM's that were compiled for ppc (or ppc64 if you have a 64 bit processor). I know that ppc64 rpms are available. I have used SuSE SLES 8 on PPC for years and loved it! I know that SuSE makes a ppc version of their professional Linux (the free one). I think that version 9.1 is going to be available soon. I am using 9.1 on Intel and love it.

(In my personal opinion, the PowerPC chip is far superior to the Intel chip set.)

lol compile the source code. mayeb if someone showed me HOW TO, then yea. yea i agree, RISC chipsets are far better than x86. is the AMD64 an x86?
