no, usually it's just a matter of downloading it through CVS, then cd into the directory and type:
make -f Makefile.cvs
./configure
make
su
make install

but it can depend from one package to another, but this is how it's usually done. most of the times it's explained on the website how to compile it from CVS

Sweet! I will give it a try and let you guys all know how it goes. Maybe I will make a mini how to on it. That would be cool.

Thanks again!

KDE is better
I have used both

dorward 05-26-2002 06:11 AM

I find both to be far to bloated, both in terms of system resources and screen space. I'm sticking to fluxbox.

Filsta 05-26-2002 06:31 AM

i like kde 'cause it looks kewl with the liquid theme =)

Brion 05-26-2002 06:40 AM

i also prefer KDE
i find KDE to be more mature than gnome and i always hated the way GTK widgets looked compared to what u can do with QT widgets

i know gnome is faster, but if u compile KDE with --enable-fast-malloc=full and objprelinking it's fast (even on my PIII 450)

i also prefer many KDE applications over others (konq over mozilla, kmail over sylpheed or evolution or mozmail or ..., konsole over eterm or aterm or xterm, knode over pan, ...)

and KDE3 + liquid == desktop heaven :)

btw, check out some of my KDE3 screenshots at http://users.pandora.be/ralinx/kde3

Noerr 05-26-2002 06:51 AM

KDE looks and feels nicer to me too. I think that system utils for KDE are also better.
I just wonder when m$ will put out IE v12.5 or Windows KD sp34 which will include transparent window backgroud, liquid desktop ... and put (TM) and (R) and (C) all over.

So does anyone know how I can unistall Nautilus? And what will happen when I do and try to boot into Gnome?

danrees 05-26-2002 08:11 AM

You can uninstall nautilus and still use GNOME. You simply won't have a desktop or graphical file manager, unless you use the old gmc. Note, this can also act as a desktop manager too.

Nautilus is a pretty big chunk of the GNOME project - if nautilus is too clunky for you, then why not use only a WM or another desktop?

jISV 05-26-2002 01:11 PM

I just booted into gnome rather than kde, i like the tailoring of things a lot more than kde. i do like to use some kde apps, so it's a pity that kde things don't dock into the gnome panel. i get a little annoyed with how slow kde is to start! It takes such a long time.

How do you know that, Aussie. :)

Calum 05-27-2002 10:49 AM

KDE is better, GNOME always feels like it's playing catchup, but try the other desktops too, biggfatts, if you have mandrake 8.2 then you have KDE 2.4 which is not worth upgrading to 3.0 so i hear, wait till 3.1 or later i am told. You also have windowmaker, blackbox and XFce to pick from, as well as enlightenment. I don't like enlightenment much, i'm afraid, and i think with a bit of time i will probably like KDE best and XFce second. It has the minimalist "click on the desktop but no icons" approach like i have heard Solaris has, but it also has a Mac-like toolbar! cool!

Jargon 05-27-2002 10:59 AM

Aussie knows it because he is a guru, but as I heard from the whistles in the wind, he is right, 3.0.1 is out and 3.1 is not far from being out(I don't know when though! I'm not a guru!) And personnally I also like very much KDE (specially with liquid installed!)

Brion 05-27-2002 12:05 PM

u don't have to be a guru to know when the next KDE release will be out

all u need to do is goto this page (http://developer.kde.org/) and check out the release plans. of course the dates won't always be right, but they will give u a good idea on when it'll come out

or u could just subscribe to some KDE mailinglists to stay informed. that's all there is to it :)

So far it's been a stone cold bit*h...

I am no programmer, but I don't know how to CVS for one. Then, I am getting all kinds of depency problems. But I will keep going, and keep you updated
