KDE vs Gnome
Hello all,
I just installed Mandrake 8.2 on my laptop today and I am fairly new to Linux. I was wondering if I could get some feed bad from all you more experienced uses as to which XServer you like the best. Do you like KDE or Gnome, and why? I am looking for the one that will make it easier for me to learn. David :study: |
HI biggie.
I would prefer GNOME as it has more optons to configure and better functions (drag 'N' Drop) |
First, just so you know that KDE and Gnome are not X servers, they are desktop environments.
Personally, I think you should install both if you can and play with them. Everyone has different taste. I like KDE because I think it looks brighter and prettier, while Gnome is faster but is is not as pretty, in my opinion. Of course, Enlightenment is the best for eye candy. And Black box is very minmal. |
Like Stephanie said, install both, you can start wars with those types of questions or seeking opinions. Or just save yourself the heartache and use Enlightenment. :D
But if you really want to learn, don't use any GUI for the time being and use only the command.. that's how you'll learn Linux. |
Hello all,
I think Gnome is the best...its using CORBA architecture. Faster and more stable. KDE is cool! So...install both!!! |
KDE 3.0.1 is out. It's mainly a bugfix release and any new features (such as tabbed browsing for konqueror) will be in 3.1, due in about three months from now.

KDE, Gnome, Enlightenment
I like KDE the best only because it has a stable feel to it. On many different systems, I've noticed Gnome (as installed by Slackware 8.0) seems flaky and unfinished. Enlightenment is crap in my experience. It does all kinds of stupid things and I can't get it to stop. Like that little window that comes up everytime you log into Enlightenment, and it shows like a thumbnail of your screen, kinda like picture in picture, only you're watching the same channel on both pictures. What's the point of that??? It is SO slow to refresh, even on machines with a really nice CPU and GPU. I very much dislike the fact that I can't just close it and exit my X session and save settings, and it doesn't remember that I don't want that terd to come up again next time I log on. I'm sure it has some actual purpose, but I'm too busy learning other parts of linux and programming that, to me, are far more important than cute little desktop environments and so forth.
I guess about the only utility you'll get out of this post is that if you're a user who's not particularly concerned with learning all about the desktop environment and you just need to use it to do X-based work, then go with KDE. I think you'll have the easiest time with that. In my very humble opinion. :) Again, I haven't used the latest and greatest of any of the DE's, just the ones that Slackware 8.0 installs, so my info is also a little behind current. |

I know that at the Enlightenment website they say that there is no projected date for E17, but do any of you have inside info so I can either stop waiting and move on to improving my current desktops, or I can hold off for a bit longer and get the much anticipated E17?

To be honest, if I can get my work done I really don't give a monkeys what WM or desktop I am running (once the wow-factor of a new release, e.g. KDE3 has passed). I mainly use KDE because I was brought up on that wonderful OS they call Windows, and I'm too lazy to tweak fvwm or enlightenment to an interesting setup.
Having said that, if I'm looking to get a CPU-intensive task done quickly, I might fire up fvwm or blackbox because they obviously have a much smaller footprint than KDE or GNOME. Applications are a different matter- I much prefer konq to nautilus, and when konq gets tabbed browsing in 3.1 I will probably use that over Mozilla. Likewise, I don't need all the features in evolution, and I don't like balsa, so I usually use kmail as a graphical MUA. On the other hand, KDE has nothing to compare with gimp, and ksirc or kvirc just don't compare to xchat. So if I'm working in KDE I'll use GNOME applications, and vice versa. |

I think I have made my descision. I have used KDE and Gnome since I started this thread and I think I like KDE better. Functionallity wise it is a little closer to what I'm used to (Windows). At this point in time I want to focus on things like configuring Samba and Apache and installing programs. ONce I get a handle on things like that I will learn how to install other desktops to give them a try. Thanks for all the opinions peeps...
