How to upgrade from KDE 3.2 to KDE 3.3 on SuSE 9.1
 

I have spent a considerable amount of time trying to find a thread on the "easy way" to install KDE 3.3 on SuSE 9.1, but can't seem to find the thread. I found it yesterday on LinuxQuestion.org, but I can't seem to find it today!

Please begin with where to download the exact file(s) that I need. I have just installed SuSE Linux 9.1 and have the latest "patches" on everything system-wide (according to YAST). I know I'm new to Linux, but whatever happened to downloading 1 file and executing it! ;-) [just kidding], I do however, need to know what file(s) to download and how to install those files.

Being fairly new to Linux, (learning quickly because it is now my only OS!), can someone please tell me step by step how to upgrade from 3.2 to 3.3? If you only know of a thread that will show me, I'd deeply appreciate the help. Again, I'm new, so please provide explicit command line details. Thanks!

No problem skydart, we've all been in the same spot where we are anxious to get a reply to the question, but sometimes it does take some time before a reply is received, particularly when you consider that the LQ membership is worldwide. Thanks for understanding. -- J.W.

Incidently, I think I may have found the solution to updating to KDE 3.3.

I read the links that ithawtewrong has posted, and found that if you go to http://forums.suselinuxsupport.de/in...pic=4013&st=30 and scroll near the bottom of the page, you'll find the source file you need to use.

From what I've read, you need to install from GNOME or some other front end, ensuring that KDE is not running. You can even do this through YaST (via GNOME). You'll need to change your "soure" in YaST, to wherever you placed the downloaded file. (you can get teh download link at the link I just posted).

well, the easy thing is to use YaST2...
add this in you download resources
and then do a System Update...

thats it

All from within the KDE desktop using YAST? For real? Have you done that and if so, did you experience any problems?


When I go to that link, it provide a couple of different subdirectories, etc. What exactly do I need to download, and from what directory? OR, do I somehow tell YAST to point to the link you provided, and if so, how? As a new Source?

I did it when updating to 3.2.3 and when updating to 3.3...no problems what so ever

if you open Control Panel and click on the bottom buttom (i cant remember the name), then you click on the top button, below the Back button, where you can add sources. choose FTP source and add "ftp.suse.com" as server and "/pub/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_9.1/yast-source/" as folder, then press OK.

After that you do a System Update, it is the button on the bottom

Im sorry, im at work now working on a windows box, so i cant remember the names of the different buttons....but i believe i remember where they are located :)

I have found that I am in desparate need of the following two files. Once I have these two files, the installation of KDE 3.3 should be like clockwork.

libjack.so.0

libaspell.so.15

Here is my question. WHERE can I get these files and HOW do I install them? If you know, PLEASE provide a link for me and tell me how to install them. (If they are .rpm's I know how to install those); as I am very new to Linux and SuSE 9.1

I do not have an install CD, so that's not an option for me.

ANY help in this matter would be deeply appreciated. Thank you!

hum, i have never had problems doing a System Update, so i have not encountered the problems you are having.

Thank you, however, in so doing, I their are so many more dependencies. I'll have to wait for SuSE to be able to come out with it. Thanks anyway. Even tried after a fresh install.

very strange, how one thing works for one installation but not on the other...

Open Office failure after KDE 3.3 upgrade
 

I successfully updated to KDE 3.3 and found it very pleasant to look at, although it did seem a little slower on my 1.5GHz Centrino T41 ThinkPad. However I was less pleased when I discovered that OpenOffice refused to start up. Whichever module I used in OO I would get no further than the bouncing icon and then be returned to the KDE desktop.

I tried a YAST de-install and reinstall of OO without success before reverting to KDE 3.2.1.

I upgraded KDE using the method suggested by ZaphyR above, direct from the SuSE FTP server. I'm slightly disappointed that KDE did not update without consequence but I'm still happy with 3.2.1.

I just thought I would share my glitch in case others are similarly affected.
