There was a version of xfce that i tried finding a way of removing the trashcan icon and it turned out that there wasnt one. I even looked on an xfce dev forum. I eventually ended up ditching xfce for fluxbox and rox-filer, a much superior alternative to the DE imo.

I just remove icons from my desktop.
I do think the "leave it there until space is full" is the way to go for "normnal users" but nopt so good for those of us who want to delete "that picture".
