Continuing freezes with no choice but hard reboot
Hi,
I have a dual-boot desktop with Ubuntu 13.10 and windows 7. I have experience constant freezes since I installed xbmc, so I uninstalled it and now the lock ups happen randomly in Ubuntu. I have tried all of the nvidia drivers and everyone seems worst than the one before. I mean more problems are created with each driver. I have purge nvidia everytime I installed a next nvidia driver and the 319 (propetiary) is the most stable so far, but i can't get to get Linux to work properly, but windows 7 runs smooth and that is really weird. The freezes occur this way: I'm using watching a video or listen to music or browsing the internet (hopefully i can finish this post) and the cursor stops moving, but my keyboard is still responsive music keeps playing or video and the clock keeps running. At this point I press ALT+CTRL+F1 and everything stops working right away and the screen is completely unresponsive and I have no other choice, but to hard reboot my computer which hurts my heart. Hopefully you guys can help me otherwise I would have to back to Windows. NOOOOOOOO!! That just gave me goose bumps, scary thought. Thank you in advance. Hi,
Does anyone know where should I start to look for a solution to this problem, please? Is there any app/program that can help find any conflict between packages or driver errors? I need some assistance on this matter or some guidance on where to go get some help. Thank you for your time. |
You might want to start investigating /var/log.
One application that might help is 'star'. Hope this helps. |
ATM I believe this to be a hardware failure of the graphics card. However, it could also be due to bad drivers. How sure are you that it doesn't happen in Windoze ? Test it out.

Hi,
The freezes have not stopped and the /var/log does not show something really critical to my eyes that is, but there were some that caught my attention: Code:
Feb 8 18:00:32 theunique-NP220AA-A2L-p6152f udisksd[2360]: Mounted /dev/sdb1 at /media/theunique/My Book1 on behalf of uid 1000 Code:
Feb 8 18:52:02 theunique-NP220AA-A2L-p6152f kernel: [ 26.137431] ACPI Warning: \_SB_.PCI0.IXVE.IGPU._DSM: Argument #4 type mismatch - Found [Buffer], ACPI requires [Package] (20130517/nsarguments-95) I have run windows for hours with no freezes, so I guess it's not a hardware issue. I can even run games in windows with no lock ups. Any other suggestion on what should I look for in the var/log, that are causing continuous freezes like those? Thanks for the help. |
Look for something about the nivdia driver in Xorg.0.log. Look for things that occur near the time of the crash.
Something very important, trying using REISUB during the lockup: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reisub This will also help to write logs to disk so you can actually see something in the logs from the time of the crash. |
