AFAIK, it just involves recompiling binaries (NWN can run using the source files off a Windows install but downloaded Linux binaries). However, I do not know how much effort that requires.

I would particularly like to see Deus Ex ported over (I cannot get it to run under WinE at all).

I don't think its that simple. Unless the design and programming team started with the goal of cross-platform development, you have to take into consideration libraries that only work in windows (directX anyone?) which means you have to totally re-write the interfaces there, you have to take into account code hacks that only work in windows (if any) and all of that stuff.

Generally a good sized game that wasn't written with cross-platforms in mind is looking at a sizeable effort to port over to another platform.

Those Linux Binaries you mention that run with the source files off of windows were created at substantial effort and expense as far as I know, the "source" files you copy off a windows install are simply stuff like game graphics and scripts...not code.

However, if the game is designed from the ground up with windows and linux in mind, then the process gets a bit easier since you can choose libraries that work the same on both platforms (OpenGL and SDL I think are examples of this) that way, the difference in source code is kept at a minimum...but its still a bigger effort than it would be if you were coding only one and for one platform.

GTA III
RCT2
Age Of Mythology
Age of empires series
Flight Sim
(come to think of it the above 3 are made by micro$oft so i can dream on....)

It would be great if they ported battlefield 1942. This is the best team-bases multiplayer game ever made, in my opinion, and it would definetly be great to see a linux version.

Odd_Bloke 10-20-2003 05:49 PM

Ooh yeah, BF1942 would be nice.

And I said that they had to totally adjust the code. I just didn't say how hard it would be. :p

I'd be willing to pay standard (debut) game prices for:

1- The Monkey Island series & Grim Fandago! (maybe the upcoming Sam & Max, too?).
2- Gabriel Knight Series.
3- Blizzard's Diablo & Diablo II (+ LOD).
4- Blizzard's StarCraft & Broodwar.
5- Blizzard's WarCraft II BNE & III/TFT.
6- MDK I & II
7- Soldier of Fortune 2
8- Jedi Knight II: Outcast (and the expansion Jedi Academy).
9- Half-Life and its expansions (Opposing Force/Blue Shift) and HL2
10- Splinter Cell

PS: Is there any good app for calibrating/settin up a Joystick in Linux?
PS2: A full PC re-make of Resident Evil could be cool :D (I don't have a PSX or GC)

Thetargos 10-20-2003 06:14 PM

How could I forget?? DeusEx (and maybe Invisible War?)

LavaDevil94 10-20-2003 07:07 PM
