Looking for an Engine for Quake I running on X11 ?

Hello,

Quake I could run on X11 in the past. I remember using Quake.x11 some days,... but still long time passed.

Would you know a possible Engine for Quake simply running on X11 (without opengl)?

Years and years ago, when I was working as a Solaris administrator I installed it on our most powerful UltraSPARC server and played around with it, it was pretty cool in a nerdy sort of way to be running Quake I on a $30,000+ Sun computer that mainly ran ORACLE!

Of course my iPhone is probably more powerful than that huge thing was!

You must have had a lot of fun. The graphics were sufficiently nice to your point of view at that time? big pixels, no?

It was fast but the video wasn't particularly that great. It didn't have any specialized 3-D video card in it since it wasn't bought for graphics, it was bought to be a database server.

I had an issue 10y ago, with quake.x11 with the fullscreen. I couldn't manage to bring full. Did it on your super system?

It ran fine, and it was like a 21" Sun Trinitron monitor.

man, you were lucky.

I think that I had slackware, and it was installed at school even.
There was netscape at that time, and internet was slow.

Good time, since informatics weren't pure bloat at that time.

That's one great thing about being an employee of a Fortune 500 company's IT department -- You get the pleasure of buying all this extremely expensive computer crap, opening it up and putting it together and setting it up, without the pain having to pay for it!

Edit:

I actually got into a semi-fight with the hardware/helpdesk people who wanted to do it, but their job was to deal with Macs and PCs, not Suns, so I won out!

I mean, the guy who dealt with the Cisco routers and Windows NT mail servers, etc. didn't have to put up with that, he put them together himself and no one wanted to butt in... people just thought putting together a much bigger and more expensive Sun was cooler and wanted to take it over themselves. Kind of crazy IMHO.
