LAN games with WINE

I'm preparing for another small (<5 people) LAN party and we're getting desperate to find some more decent games.

What worked for us the last few times:

Unreal Tournament

Quake 3

Rune (with Bot Mod)

Counter Strike 1.6

Half Life Deathmatch (No Bots)

As you can probably tell from the list above we rather prefer the classics over current/modern games.

We're planning to test Age of Empires 2 (just read about the direct play fix), Warcraft 3, Flatout 2 and some Command & Conquer.. but no clue how well they work

I'm aware of winehq, but it's a pain in the a*se as you can't filter for LAN games..

We're grateful for any suggestion.

Warcraft III works perfectly. I've played through it in Wine from start to end. The only part that doesn't work perfectly is the cinematics, and the workaround for that is to rename the movie folder.

Unreal Tournament, Quake 3, Counterstrike 1.6 and Half Life all have native Linux versions, and I recommend looking into those.

And as for other Wine LAN games: how about Starcraft, Diablo 2, and (if you have the rigs for it) Starcraft II?

I've known people who used to love playing Duke Nukem 3D in their high school computer labs. Duke Nukem 3D can be played natively, with eduke32.

The open source port of Star Control II, called Ur Quan Masters, is as fun as it ever was. It has a one-on-one deathmatch mode, which is AMAZING, and which certainly works over a LAN.

You might also use this as an opportunity to try out the current version of Unreal Tournament 4.

Haven't tried AOE 2 yet, but AOM works just fine. Edit: AOE2 networking causes a wine crash, though everything else works... DirectPlay I guess

These are a lot of fps, perhaps some strategy games?

I would suggest Total Annihilation.
Sure, it's 17 years old now. But the fact it is still active in modding communities should tell you all you need to know.

I used to play (in windows) "Kohan: Immortal Sovereigns" (RTS) on LAN and it was awesome experience.

I have never tried it, but I'd like to try "X-Wing vs. TIE-Fighter" on LAN.

Torchlight 2 supports LAN play.

Yep. Many of which have pre-setup Wine wrappers.

I can tell you with AOE 2, the best way is to run it in VBox. It will run in Wine, but all the fonts look like crap.

Also, check out Steam. They have a LOT of Linux games. Also, I'd hunt down the Linux version of Unreal Tournament and Q3A. They'll run a lot better natively than in Wine.

EDIT: also pretty sure the early Call Of Duty games will run under ioquake3.
