What Linux distribution are you using, and what did you download to install the game? Was it gzipped source code? A .deb file? If you're using one of the distros that use rpm or apt, it will be very easy to install.

Torcs - http://torcs.sourceforge.net/ is a pretty good free racing game. The graphics aren't the greatest, but the control and physics are pretty good. Most importantly it is fun.
Battle for Wesnoth - http://www.wesnoth.org/ is a free strategy game.
Planeshift - http://www.planeshift.it/main_01.html is a free MMORPG, it has a long way to go before it is anywhere near complete, but has good potential.
Eternal Lands - http://www.eternal-lands.com/ is another free MMORPG under development.

And ofcourse $ games:
unreal tournament2003
ut2004
doom3
quake4
neverwinter nights (really sad about no nwn2 linux client, that's one less sure sale for them)
return to castle wolfenstein

I'm using Fedora core 4, and the download I got was a zip file.

sonic04002 10-26-2005 01:36 PM

I didn't see any rpm for download.

I have to say that when I had the old commodore Amiga and the even older Commodore 64 I used to love playing "The Bards Tale" and now they have a Linux version called Devils Whiskey. All good fun and very addictive...

I got Doom 3 up and running recently, do any of the cheats work on linux?

Mat

Yes, all the D3 cheats work just the same as on Windows.

Just an FYI, id software recently released a Quake 4 client compatible with Linux, here is the link:

There is a link to the linux binary here:

http://www.technetworkz.com/archives...nt-13-finally/

or if you happen to be using Gentoo (like me) then just:

emerge doom3

And thanks for the subsim link.Just spotted this post. Dangerdeep has many non-funtioning features but it's playable and the graphics are very nice.

Till now I've been playing the original Aces of the Deep in DOSBox. The gameplay is still very good but the graphics are crude.
If you are playing Dangerdeep, do you know if time compression is working? F11 & F12 seem to have a different function than advertised.[edit/] Ok the game is setup for a German keyboard.New question. How do I save my settings? [/edit]

Has anyone been able to get a subsim running in wine? Winehq has very little info on this. I'm trying to avoid booting back and forth just to play a single game.

Can you guys point out some good Linux strategy games? I know of FreeCiv but am especially interested in RTSs. Any games like Total Annihilation, Age of Empires, Star Craft, or Rise of Nations?
