Good Linux Games
I just thought it would be cool to have a thread where users could come post good games(or bad ones i suppose) that they've played on linux. I love gaming, but I love Linux also and can't live w/o windows only because of the games. I have spent alot of time looking for good games for linux, but usually come up with something that I would've paid $9.99 for to run on my 486 back in the mid 90s. I want something better. Cube(http://www.cubeengine.com/) is a good game that a friend showed me. It's open source, fps, online and networking capabilities. It's not the greatest graphics in the world, but it's good for a game that's completely free. The maker has also come out with the "next-gen version of cube", named Sauerbraten. It's basically Cube 2, but with better graphics. Alot better. It's still "experimental" but it looks nice. Wow, kindof got off on a rant there ;) Anyway, I think this kind of thread would be benificial. Thanks!

Well, I was big into gaming when I first migrated to Linux, luckily, I was big into iD games. My favorite games to play on Linux are:
Enemy Territory Return to Castle Wolfenstein Doom3 Counter-Strike Source Neverwinter Nights Guild Wars Klotski Frozen-Bubble Risk I only had to give up a couple games: Stronghold 2, Joint Ops, Silent Hill: The Room, and Rainbow Six. I really don't play anything these days. |
Nexuiz is a nice FPS that i've played recently. It's based on a Quake1 derivative engine, is released under the GPL, and runs on Linux very nicely.

how do i run guild wars on linux??
|
Cedega
It is fully supported now, works quite well. There are guides on the internet to get the CVS so you don't have to pay 5 dollars a month to use Point2Play. |
mkk i kant find ne guides i have a guild wars acc.but could somebody tell me an excat site with an easy guide plz.

|
Easiest way...get the CVS of Cedega 4.4.1 and the frontend Grapevine instead of Point2Play. I used that to install GWs and then
Code:
cedega ~/Transgaming_Drive/Program\ Files/Guild\ Wars/Gw.exe Edit: Grapevine is a free frontend and works just as well as Point2Play. |

Racer is a game I played at the recent LWE London. It's open source and downloadable.

Americas Army: http://www.americasarmy.com (Check http://icculus.org for updates on latest versions)
You can also check out the Americasarmy.com forums under the Linux section for updates on release of new version. Americas Army is a great FPS that is free. Great graphics/sound/gameplay. |
Well - I know these are not in the same league, or universe, as the previous offerings. However, I have enjoyed:
nethack - well yeah. The falcon's eye frontend is very cool, but unfinished. Nobody seems to be maintaining it any more... what seems needed is a swap site for home-made xml tiles for the thing. I gather it is possible to add ones own tileset these days but cannot find a howto. ultima - for fans. Perhaps somewhat outdated, but a range of ultimas run under linux interactive fiction via one of the z-machine interpreters. most distros have access to frotz (apt-get install or yum install frotz) the old infocom dos games and many more are available and you can write your own. From the dos games, you only need the .dat file and frotz (frotz game.dat) to play. Though you'll probably need the scanned manual to evade the copy protection. mostly, games that run well are somewhat old. I've been playing around with whomping up some of the older ones myself - like that old chunky-graphics starfighter I used to have on the trs80? Better graphics and the same gameplay should be good fun. Quit a lot of the online games clients will run under cedega of course. There are free frontends for cedega so you don't need point2play. |
I started playing Nethack after seeing it in Linux Journal just this past issue. If you like RPG, you might like Tibia, a free (unless you want access to other areas, still fun as free) MMORPG that runs natively on Linux.
|
Being and old-hand table-top rpg player, I wouldn't classify nethack as rpg. In massive multiplayer games, I'm seriously looking at eve.
|
I play alot of UT 2004. I also second the motion on Racer being excellent, although I'm pretty sure the newer releases are no longer open source.

Professor Fizzwizzle

Diablo II plays almost flawlessly under wine on fedora 4. I have only had some issues with the floor rendering but I think that is a problem with my configuration. I believe Counter Strike 3 (if my memory serves me right) plays perfect under wine as well.
|
I must admit, Professor Fizzwizzle [linuX-gamers.net] is very addictive :)
I'm not continuing the promotion; however, I don't think a linux game should be removed simply because he was the creator. |

Sorry guys, I didn't figure it would count as advertising in a thread asking about Linux games... I could have posted under a fake name and there would've been no problem, but that would have been dishonest. Also, you'll see my registration date is Nov 2004... I'm not new here; I just lurk.
Anyway, I apologize if I have broken the rules. Shant happen again. |
I see Falcon's Eye has been mentioned a few times - I played it back on Windows - good lighted hearted fun :) . I've been trying to get it to run on Debian (sarge) but after choosing a character, I just get a blank screen. A quick google suggests I'm not the only one, has anyone here experienced/overcome this bug? As a last resort, I can try run the windows version through wine ...but that really would smack of lameness.
|
I've had similar problems with Falconeye. It was just never updated past an unstable version, I think. It froze for me right after loading up the screen, and then I can't close out of it because the program becomes an unkillable zombie. Pain in the butt.. hope someone picks the project back up one of these days.

I see a lot posted here and elsewhere about rpg and fps games. Personally, I enjoy flight simulators such as (gasp!) MS Combat FS. I've googled and it seems there are only two or three flight sims and none that are combat (online or against the computer) systems.
Anyone know of a good one? Will the MS CFS run under Wine? Thanks Tim |
Hey guys,
Don't forget TrueCombat at www.truecombat.com - FREE but you need ET (which is also FREE) :) Regards |
Where do i get America's Army for Linux - went to the website - all for window$ only!

Hey, I'm pretty new to linux, how do you install games on linux? I downloaded some of the games you people were talkinga bout from the sites you posted, but then I got confused... so if someone can help me it'd be great! Thanks
|

you have a much better shot of getting help with your installation issues if you specify which game(s) you are trying to install... |
Sorry about not saying what games. I cannot get Nexuiz to install. Can anyone help me?
|
What Linux distribution are you using, and what did you download to install the game? Was it gzipped source code? A .deb file? If you're using one of the distros that use rpm or apt, it will be very easy to install.
|
Torcs - http://torcs.sourceforge.net/ is a pretty good free racing game. The graphics aren't the greatest, but the control and physics are pretty good. Most importantly it is fun.
Battle for Wesnoth - http://www.wesnoth.org/ is a free strategy game. Planeshift - http://www.planeshift.it/main_01.html is a free MMORPG, it has a long way to go before it is anywhere near complete, but has good potential. Eternal Lands - http://www.eternal-lands.com/ is another free MMORPG under development. And ofcourse $ games: unreal tournament2003 ut2004 doom3 quake4 neverwinter nights (really sad about no nwn2 linux client, that's one less sure sale for them) return to castle wolfenstein |
I'm using Fedora core 4, and the download I got was a zip file.
|
I didn't see any rpm for download.
|
what did you get when you unzipped the file?? is there any text files called README and/or INSTALL?? what do they say??
|
Hey
Thanks for the racing game I am going to give it a run - also anyone interested in WW2 submarine combat look at this: http://dangerdeep.sourceforge.net/gallery.php Regards |
trobins2005
You will need cadega to run FS stuff, look at http://www.transgaming.com Regards Shelton. |
I have to say that when I had the old commodore Amiga and the even older Commodore 64 I used to love playing "The Bards Tale" and now they have a Linux version called Devils Whiskey. All good fun and very addictive...
I got Doom 3 up and running recently, do any of the cheats work on linux? Mat |
Yes, all the D3 cheats work just the same as on Windows.
Just an FYI, id software recently released a Quake 4 client compatible with Linux, here is the link: http://zerowing.idsoftware.com/linux/quake4/ |
How do you install doom 3 on linux? what software do you need, and how do you do it?
|

The cube game looks very nice under windoze - gonna try it in Mandriva later. if I can work out how to install it.

Till now I've been playing the original Aces of the Deep in DOSBox. The gameplay is still very good but the graphics are crude. If you are playing Dangerdeep, do you know if time compression is working? F11 & F12 seem to have a different function than advertised.[edit/] Ok the game is setup for a German keyboard.New question. How do I save my settings? [/edit] Has anyone been able to get a subsim running in wine? Winehq has very little info on this. I'm trying to avoid booting back and forth just to play a single game. |
Can you guys point out some good Linux strategy games? I know of FreeCiv but am especially interested in RTSs. Any games like Total Annihilation, Age of Empires, Star Craft, or Rise of Nations?
|
How about Glest (www.glest.org) with loki installer at www.liflg.org.
There is also Tribal Trouble (www.tribaltrouble.com) which is pretty fun, not as much about base building, more build and army/attack. Since you mentioned Total Annihilation, have you checked out TA3D the Total Annihilation Clone (http://sourceforge.net/projects/ta3d) Also, Warcraft 3 and the expansion Frozen Throne run extremely well for me under wine with no significant issues. If you haven't been there before, I recommend checking out www.happypenguin.org, excellent linux gaming resource. |
Don't forget your SNES~!!
Hey guys, don't forget Snes9x, a great open source super nintendo emulator. I was able to compile it just fine under slackware 10.2... plus there have been a lot of translation efforts in the last few years (Bahamut lagoon, star ocean, seiken densetsu, etc) so you can actually play more games than existed for the SNES.
