Here's a link I found awhile back: http://ww2.kqed.org/mindshift/2013/0...lly-knowledge/

I was looking up where to draw that line one week when my 11 year old nephew got us hooked on agar.io ... you'd think it's just blobs eating each other but them blobs is people!

Edit: that link must change weekly or whatever here's my reference: Is Undertale The Most Violent Game This Year? | Idea Channel | PBS Digital Studios\https://youtu.be/qvSd_opycoI

Thanks for the more comments guys. I hear ya on the violent video games part, but to each their own. I'll have to try to load some of those up for them, then they can always delete the ones they don't like.

So what's the deal with all these emulators and stuff for old video game systems? Are they legit?

I guess it depends on the user case. It does say abandonware where I get my dos box games from. But you know what they say.
Don't believe everything you read on the net.

Code:
harry@biker:~
$ apt search dosbox
Sorting... Done
Full Text Search... Done
dosbox/stable,now 0.74-4 i386 [installed]
  x86 emulator with Tandy/Herc/CGA/EGA/VGA/SVGA graphics, sound and DOS
I just download the game to /home/harry/Games and extract the file, and for default run action for the windows .exe. I set the default run action as dosbox from /usr/bin.

Code:
harry@biker:~
$ which dosbox
/usr/bin/dosbox
Lots of ways to game on linux if one takes the time to learn a little. Alt + Enter key gets you to full screen gaming in dosbox.

I felt it might be worth mentioning the violent aspects in case it was something the parents were concerned about -- not being a parent myself I don't know how these things are done.

I, like rokytnji, have found some "abandonware" on the web and am happy to uae it but the legality will be a little complicated.
Thanks to this thread I managed to find some old Amstrad games though, so now all I need is an emulator.

Just saw MECHWARRIOR3 in there, wonder if it's in PlayOnLinux ... will see?

Another good plan is showing the kids (like I did my nephew) how to use Synaptic\Apper\* and Google to some extent with parental commentary.

Edit: didn't mean... [strike]to some extent[/strike]. (No ceilings! )

Also, don't forget Portal and Portal 2 -- classics and they ought to be OK for those worried about violent games.
I've haven't tried the world builder (Hammer, if memory serves me well) since the old CD version of Half-Life but I do believe it's included with Steam, or at least with a given game on Steam I just don't know where it's at or out to launch it. I do see the word 'workshop' a lot when browsing Steam and I think that may have something to do with it?

Thanks, I'll take a more detailed look in Steam. I used to like making my own maps.

Now a days if companies gear their games towards Linux, like I've seen in Steam,
the games seem more artistic, original and++ well played.

If text adventures are your thing then a Z-machine interpreter like Frotz is a must for things like Murder At The Diogenese Club and, if you can find it, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (amongst many more, of course).
If you're using Slackware, don't use Frotz. Use Gargoyle and package it with my SlackBuild, which does a git checkout and applies some community patches:
