Feel free to pick up my idea on the FPS. A 3D (or not) RPG would also be fun. When I get around to it again, I'll jump back on my FPS (though I gotz no idea what in hell I'm doing:D ).

I don't know really to be honest. Running a hdparm. the 52x is still the fastest one of them...
As long as i remember to put a cd in them that is :)

There's some ideas for a fps-rpg further up in the thread. *smiles*
I'm working on a story and history for it inbetween all the other things i'm working on. :)
I'll tell when it's done :) or i'm satisfied with the bare bones at least *thinks*
If not you'll have to buy it in a bookstore. :)

I know what I want, but I don't know how to design a game to make it like I want yet. I guess I just gotta butt heads with it.

pilot1 01-04-2004 06:49 AM

Kroppus, are you able to get onto the Dalnet IRC channel for this?
I got disconnected while I was away, and now every Dalnet server I try times out. Even the one you were using before..

Take a look at the http://www.dal.net
and look at servers. there's the servers that's up and running.
I discovered that noen of the servers i had on my x-chat list was lsted there. *spent almost 3 weeks before he found out* Almost lost my other room too :(

I didn't say you were insane.:) ...as for me, I'm just one of those Jeff Foxworthy rednecks.:D

The first tutorial looks like exactly what I need in the quick glance over I just did. The other two may (likely will) be useful after I learn how to use Blender.:D Not bad.:study:

pilot1 01-04-2004 09:02 PM

hmm.. do you know of any other places with servers, Kroppus?
Only one of those worked for me, and I promptly encountered a netsplit after joining. Figures.

Oh, BTW: do you know any good way to start auto learning programming???

Thank you very much.

So we got us an insane Norwegian, a Jeff Foxworthy redneck and me, a crazy Canuck. Oh and i'm not obsessed with hockey (please don't tell my government or they'll deport me!!:D)

I know exactly what you mean lectraplayer. That was a big problem o the Wacken Open Air forum. People just barging into any thread to spill their guts and hopefully take over the treads with bullshit. The main reason that i've given up that forum. *sighs* When every thread you're on either turn into one with what i did last weekend or how drunk i was or what band i saw/heard. That's if they remembered the weekend at all. :)

No hitting each other here and for you cross-dressers. yeah this forum is a really nice breath of fresh air. Usually people are really good at sticking to the topic.

I will check these new tutorials later - seems like everyone likes them.
I can visualize the character I will create - I am looking forward to it but I have not really had alot of time to sit around and get it down. I *will* do it though....*sometime* ~ that's a promise. ;) It may take me forever though. I am sure that once I get it started [knowing my personality] I will delve into it and prolly get it some serious headway [the initial 2d design layouts] done in two days. Once I get time to tackle it. Whe I have done that much I will scan it and put it on the net.

Abe_the_Man 01-06-2004 02:18 AM

*is actualy having fun with this book*

lectraplayer 01-06-2004 09:33 PM

Usually when people try to hijak threads where I go, a bar-room brawl or a deathmatch results. That can make for some really wild threads. :D Usually, things settle down fairly quickly, or the discussion continues among the fight. :p

Also, on Blender, it was being a b*tch with me when I was supposed to be making materials out of the meshes. What was I doing wrong?

Kroppus 01-07-2004 03:05 AM

lectraplayer
I was puzzled by the same thing...
Down to the right *thinks* yepps.. that's the place- Add the texture to one of the boxes there.
When you find it you'll know where it is.
*smiles* And you'll probably sit and call yourself a few things for not realizing that by yourself.
I did. :)

lectraplayer 01-07-2004 08:43 PM

I do know that in the Materials menu, there was only four buttons. One showed the name of the object (all I could get it to say was Sphere). Another was an Obj button, the third and fourth were (something else, don't remember right off hand. It's been a few hours since I was messing with it). I banged on 'em all and couldn't get it to do anything. I did see a texture menu (that I couldn't do anything in until I made materials from my meshes.

mossy 01-07-2004 10:51 PM

*just a thought*

lectraplayer - are'nt you using the older 2.25 blernder verison?
I think Kroppus is using 2.28c or 2.3?

that may be the difference [?].

Kroppus 01-08-2004 02:53 AM

mossy you're probably right...
I'm using the latest version of blender since the last debianpackage don't work.
Well, unless you are loged on as jose and have it installed in that homedir.
This is the unstable version. My installed version of blender disappered totally for me.
So i' running the latest from Blender.

Just some other info. I'm actualy getting to the point where i'm almost done with one game idea.
So i think that on either friday or saturday i'll be posting it on the net, with a link here.
At the same time i've scrapped all the textures i had made and will start on a new set later this weekend. Unless i go out and get drunk again. :)

Kroppus 01-08-2004 11:09 AM

Ok folks.. Underhive is now officially on the tracks. :)
I've finally gotten the most of it done. *is shocked*
Well,,, the starting documentation at least. :)
There will be a lot more added later, or whenever i get new ideas to put into it.
And i've put it up on this page.

http://home.no.net/kroppus/

I also made a forum while waiting for the coffe to get warm.....

http://underhive.myikonboard.com/

So head over and read and think about the idea. If you like it, tell me. And if you don't like it, then tell me what you don't like about it. Later i'm going to apply for webspace at sourceforge for this project. Anyone that want to join in either beep me on icq or mail me. Ok?

jago25_98 01-08-2004 11:39 AM

Could be like a meta-game:

1st person shooter inside a strategy game,
the results of the 1st person battles play out to the larger strategy scale.

Very simple example:

Individual servers of Tribes2 are represented by red or blue depending on which side wins in each server

In any eventuality the popular game is the one that gives the players the most choice. Since online gaming it gets pretty non-linear and pretty compilcated. Could be made simpler by all-vs-computer

Kroppus 01-08-2004 12:20 PM

@ jago25_98
Yeps.. But then again.. making a solo-player game demands that you really have to work on the AI part. And that's one of the hardest parts to get right in any game. Another thing is that the strategical parts will loose their interest since you'll have to go out to get credits for so again run back into the stronghold and build o buy what you need.

I've never played Tribes so i have no idea how that game is. :)

I had an idea of making an MMORPG out of it with the administrators being the forces of the Empire, with all the goods that folows with that. *grins* "Oh? That gang is making problems? Send in a squad of Space Marines and take them out..." POOOOOOF That's that gang taken care of.... :)

More updates are coming later on the side. I just thought that it was better that you all could see and ecide if this is something that you like or not. :)

mossy 01-08-2004 12:34 PM

Kroppus ~ Very interesting - it has alot of potential. The draft is riddled with grammatical typo's et cetera - I can go over it and email you some corrections if you like,

mossy 01-08-2004 12:41 PM

hmm actually I like the MMORPG idea, gangs could join up to counter threats from the forces. In order for people to want to be with the forces they would have to have a semi-legitimate moral ideology [war on terrorism?] then at least *some* people would pick that side. Otherwise it would be everyone in a gang [smiles] and we'd have to use bots for the forces.

Kroppus 01-08-2004 12:51 PM

Mossy
I know there's a lot of typos in it. I just sped through it with abi-word to get it out today before i fell asleep at the keys. :)
Go ahead and clean it up and send me :) I don't mind that at all.
The MMORPG idea is a great idea in the back of my head all the time. The problem is that the game then needs dedicated servers. But hopefully that shouldn't be a problem, even if that means to have to charge a small amount of money from each player.
For the forces that be you got the mutatnts and "scavengers" (humans that live out in the wastelands). They're going to appear every now and then. After all they need stuff to survive too. The main idea is to start with the gangs in the Hive and then add on more gangs and other races, maybe other planets and stuff later on. After seeing how the first part turns out. :)

send me a mail and i'l get back to you with my standard mail addy :)
or beep me on ICQ... Added #Underhive on Dalnet too :)

lectraplayer 01-08-2004 09:27 PM

I think I'm using Blender 2.3 if I remember right. I know the game engine is disabled on mine, and I've seen documentation that it's disabled on 2.3. Think they may have changed something about adding materials to the meshes on that version?

Kroppus 01-09-2004 06:07 AM

I'm using blender 2.31.a to be exactly :)
Eh? That is when i use it :)
*goes back to do some more work on Underhive*

DoomRider 01-12-2004 04:15 PM

Hi.

Wouldn't it be wiser to develop an Open Gaming API. One that can be adopted across the board (Linux/ *nix like/ etc). and I dont mean OpenGL or the sorts. I mean an API which includes the development of drivers and common interfaces.
Hardware manufactures can standardise on the driver side and Game developers can conform to a common interface so as to create a stable environment. Yes X11 and OpenGL is nice, however, not everyone is writing driver support for them...

No matter how we look at it, the common denominator in M$ gaming platforms ends up being Direct#. Linux needs a simular interface.

The original idea is worth the effort should everyone agree on what standard can be adopted.

What say you...

Ciccio 01-12-2004 06:27 PM

SDL

Kroppus 01-12-2004 06:39 PM

DoomRider
To me this is all about making a game for linux. I don't know how to code for any Intel cpu, so learning that so that i can sweat more over my ideas? No thanks.
I'm working on the docs and specs for my idea so i'm buzy. Hell, if everything goes down, i'll attempt to make it into a mod for UT, probably UT 2010 or something. :)
And about API. DirectX is ok, the drivers work ok. Why? Because no one updates thw windows "kernel", no one makes their own tweak in the operativesystem and you got all the basic stuff installed from start. Doing the same for linux is a task i wouldn't set my worst enemy to do. 'cause that would force us to use one distro (or a copy), Install this and that and so on.. Hello mister?
What kernel are you running? 2.4.18? 2.4.20? 2.4.22? 2.4.25? 2.5.50? 2.5.69? 2.5.75? 2.6.0? 2.6.1?
Imagine making one API that covers just that, then add for the rest of the stuff you got in your pc.. Gcc etc...
*wishes DoomRider good luck*
Sorry, but to me that seems like a hell of a lot of work just to see one of your many ideas on a pc.

Underhive is under work,,, Right now i'm working on the game spec list. Trying to elaborate what the ideas are and how to solve them. Scetching out ideas for HUD, Interface, menus and so on... Just boring graphical work so far.
More info when it's more to tell :)

ShakyJake 01-13-2004 10:11 PM

I haven't read the entire thread, so not sure if anyone else has said this. But probably the best bet it for someone to create a set of tools that would make it easy for a developer to port their Windows code to the Linux platform. Ideally, every time a game is released there will be both the Windows and Linux version in the same box (just program code, graphics, music, etc. would be common files shared)

I think Linux will attract a lot of new users if they know they can play their games. No one really "needs" MS Office, just a functional word processor, spreadsheet, etc. But the games are something that pretty much forces you to stick to Windows. I know if the majority of games I play could be played on Linux, I'd completeyl wipe Windows off my hard drive.

ShaneB 01-14-2004 01:39 PM

How's Blender to learn on? I'm trying to make the move to Linux for all my pipelines, from PS to GIMP and Max to Blender, mainly since I can't afford the upgrades for the proprietary stuff anymore. I've been using Max for about 4 years now and I find Blender to be quite a.....well let's just say it's interface is an enigma, but so was Max's in the beginning. I noticed the default sphere I created didn't have any smoothing groups assigned by default, I sure hope there is a way to do something similar in Blender :)

I'm glad the UT series has a Linux installer (haven't tried it yet but will probably try to install 2003 tonight) since that's the environment I'm used to. I did all the weapon models and animations for the UT mod Weapons Factory and hope that Blender can handle importing into the Unreal Engine's format without a bunch of juggling between apps. I kinda miss modding that series :(

Oh and vehicles are coming in UT 2004, hrm....

LavaDevil94 01-14-2004 02:24 PM

about that majority thing, shakyjake, you might want to take a look at wine:
http://winehq.org
and wine's variant that has a better directx implementation, making it better for games:
http://transgaming.com

lectraplayer 01-15-2004 08:46 PM

...as for standards in Linux, I wouldn't count on it. One guy might come up with that standard, and then a few days later, someone else may come up with something much better. ...then when both of these people share their ideas, something way better may result. That's what Linux is all about, though it does cause some headaces. Don't get me wrong, I would like to see a handful of standard specs devoted to some of this stuff (like what was done to the filesystem for example). The reason that's so simple now is because the specs were standardized right from the beginning. Imagine how hard it would be to use your computer if the filesystem wasn't standardized! 3D engines can be standardized in a similar way if necessary. Everything can be standardized, though if that happens, things may not necessarily get better. It's kinda a double-edged sword.

Abe_the_Man 01-15-2004 11:58 PM

I installed gtk-radiant today, i was gonna try my hand at making a enemy-territory map, when i had a thought, why don't we a total conversion of ET or maybe americas army. Since both games are free a LOT of users would be able to try it. I did a search on yahoo and i wan't able to find any total conversions of either game, even RtCW only has like 2. Doing one for et wouldsave us a lot of work, because all the tools are already available, and there are many quake 3 mappers/modellers etc. out there who we could maybe recruit if need be. Also there are loads of tutorials out there for gtk-radiant which is linux native (i'm not sure if ut's editor is). So what you all think?????

Kroppus 01-16-2004 03:57 AM

ShaneB
Blender is a bit difficult, but so is all 3d programs when you're used to one.
I've been doing most of my work on Real 3D (on my old Amiga) and with Imagine (Amiga + PC). So i've been spending a lot of time staring at blender and wondering what is what. :)
Take a look at the links here:
http://blendercreations.tripod.com/...s/tutorial.html
http://blendercreations.tripod.com/...s/keyframe.html
http://www.elysiun.com/tutorials.php?id=8
They are basic ones but at least they'll point you where to go.

The WF mods was great. Niice to see you. :)
I'm going to install UT2K3 later today to check out if i can get the editor to work under Linux. :)
Jepps..
UT2K4 looks awsome.... *gota have that one too*

Abe_the_Man
I'm going to use either Radiant or the UT-editor to make the "first look level" for my game idea. *sighs* When i get back to where i was with the work on it......
*lost the /home partition last night*

**gong to check out the UT editor tonight*

mossy 01-16-2004 12:25 PM

Kroppus - sorry for the delay in response.
Yeah I will go over it thoroughly and give it a proof-reading.
Time is sparse tho - I am up to my ears with work, my kid, studying, and trying to get this darn print server going trying to config cups with Debian on Sparc 5 no gui using apt-get only - any help with cups would be appreciated ! It's starting to look like this is going to be a bigger job than I thought - I cannot find a command line utility for cups. I think I may need to config it manually [jeez and then setting up the shared on the printer~ark! then making sure the damn thing does not reset if I reboot~argh! I may need to put this printer thing off for awhiule [but I need a printer and can't be bothered to get it setup and configged on my RH9 then do it again later].

Anyhow - I will give you a proof-reading [the delay is not for lack of interest] eventually.

ShaneB 01-16-2004 01:22 PM

Kroppus, thanks for the links! Good luck getting UnrealEd to run under Linux, it barely runs under Windows, hehe...let me know how it goes.

Abe, Radiant is a great editor once you get used to it. There was a huge learning curve for me though so stick with it. It's good to know if all else fails I can make some maps in linux.

Kroppus 01-16-2004 02:13 PM

mossy
No problem..
Just do me a favour and check out the file that's online when you get the time.
Thanks to a journaling error, my home partition said good night. So *sighs* i'm starting over again with a finetyping (making two versions). One that's just the basic gamespecs and one that's in-depth. Describing what features i want and how to solve them and so on. + unlimited amount of wacky ideas. :)
I'm out of time myself. Got 14 days to find a place to live, so i don't spend much time on the pc now.
DON'T ask me about printers, unless you want a printer that makes strange noises and does strange things. Printers are like women to me. I know that we need them, but i don't understand them at all. :)

ShaneB
No Problem. I had no problems geting UnrealEd to work under windows. I'm actually searching for the damned start file for it now :)

Radiant looked ok on windows and it was fairly easy to make a simple level with. I never got past the obligatory cubes with boxes between. :) I felt that when the level got a bit complcated it all became complicated. Probably me that didn't figure out how to hide stuff. :)
*wonders why radiant won't start*

ShaneB 01-16-2004 02:58 PM

If you're used to UnrealEd than Radiant can seem pretty backwards when having to create everything as additive. But brush creation and clipping is so easy in Radiant that it makes me mad to go back to UnrealEd and have to type in coordnates or use its messy vertex editing. Oh, and I should clarify, I run UnrealEd fine under Windows, it just likes to crash all the time if I don't watch out for the tripwires :)

As for the start file, do you mean Unrealed.exe? Sorry, I'm a linux newb. If so, its located in the System folder of whitchever Unreal engine game you are running.

Kroppus 01-16-2004 03:05 PM

ShaneB
I know... I started with Build and Duke Nuke'm 3d :) Then it was Worldforge (if i remember right) :)

Yepps it's the editor program i'm looking for..
*thought it was a shell script someplace*

lectraplayer 01-17-2004 08:37 PM

Before UnrealEd (which has given EVERYONE problems under Windows), the only 3D editor I've used is DEEP (for DooM). Man was I glad to be using UnrealEd once I got it going!

...but I still would like to know how to add materials to a Blender session. (did someone mention it but I read over it and missed it?):study:

...as far as the start file for UnrealEd (and I've looked for it plenty of times), it's ../Unreal/System/UnrealEd.exe (assuming you're playing Unreal). For Linux, you need WINe (and updated DLL's, still working on that one!).

Kroppus 01-18-2004 06:30 AM

*is windows free*

UnrealED is actually one of the few things that never crashed on my windows machines. *smiles* Well at least as much as windows did. :)
*sighs* Guess i have to get the SDK... *wonders where*

Not yet. I had made a few textures that i was going to try out in Blender. But as stated earleier. No such luck. :(

Hmm.. And come to think about the fact that when they was working on Unreal in the beginning. They had to port the editor over from Linux to Windows....... *grins*
Then i'll be lookng at blender later tonight... *goes out to hunt for a place to live*

Yes mum, i got the scarf and the jacket. Yes.,,,, Yes,,,, What? Opps,, Now i got the ace.. Bye....
