what video card do you have, mossy? im just trying to compare it to mine, since doom3 is coming, and i wanna be ready, and a good way to do that is see what other ppl think :). btw, shockwave not on linux doesnt tick me off as much as the lack of wildtangent. thats like directx for the internet.

Thetargos 10-13-2003 02:47 PM

As far as I know the game will benefit much from 128 Mb cards, but somewhere I read that the game won't use that much storage sapce for textures (it'll be like 80-90 Mb) at any one time. However the stress over the AGP bus with 64 Mb cards will be greater, thus taking a performance toll. Regarding the other aspect, the features needed to run the game nicely I don't know much about it, I know that the game will proficiently use fragment programs (aka shaders in the DX world) and some (much?) vertex shading (vertex programs?). In any case this game along with the upcomming HL2 (pitty it will come out first for Windows, although ther are rumors for Linux clients), will mark a breaking point for PC gaming, regardless of the platform :D

arioch 10-13-2003 02:50 PM

256mb is commin my way... :D

mossy 10-13-2003 03:38 PM

arioch - I looked already but let me know what you get up to - I'd appreciate it. :)

I have a 64 mb MX 400 nVideo chipset with a cheapo board by Best Data or something. Works pretty good to be honest but it is only using SDRAM. Most of the better cards will use DDR ram - i may get a better one eventually. Especially with games like Doom3 as it supports DirectX 9 - we will need a card that supports it [or the gpl equivalent] like the ati ati 9700 or something. LavaDevil94 - what are you running?

i may just go get a 128mb card - Fry's here in Dallas does some good deals - I've seen 'em selling 128mb nVidea's and ATI's for around $50- 60 bucks.

LavaDevil94 10-13-2003 04:56 PM

i wish i had a 128mb card. i have a radeon 9000 64mb vid. ram w/ agp 4x

Abe_the_Man 10-13-2003 08:15 PM

I just got an ATI Radeon 9200 128 DDR with 8x agp. It runs great, and only cost me $140.00 canadian (so that's only about $10 american right?)

Thetargos 10-13-2003 09:48 PM

$10 or $100 :D

I gotz an idea for a Linux game. You guys may have seen a quick description of it in my own thread. It is a FPS where the Linux crew (IE: Tux, FreeBSD Daemon, Konqui, etc.) goes after Bill Gates (or other threat) for one reason or another that I haven't yet developed. I would like to have a few suggestions on how it should play out. I am currently a C++ rookie and am working on the game engine (right now, just a few C++ code modules that do nothing, I need to know the proper libraries to use). I would like some suggestions on how the game should play out (IE: what should the threat be?, what are some foes? what are the capabilities of the FreeBSD Daemon vs. Tux vs. Konqui?) I may use the SuSE cameleon as a health restore, but I actually am thinking of using various Linux flavors for that. Maybe SuSE would be great as an intelligence probe or something. :)

If someone else wants to supervize this sucka, GO FOR IT!

Abe_the_Man 10-13-2003 10:44 PM

sounds brilliant lectraplayer (although chances of a windows or xbox port are pretty slim:D). Here's a possible story idea, Bill Gates is trying to take over the world with his massive super ship 'The Internet Explorer'. You could place the entire game inside the ship, trying to complete your mission to destroy it, but part way through your mission, the ship gets attacked by a massive wave of Super Viruses. So you have to fight the viruses and m$. You could get cool Open Souce powers to take out m$ or protect you from viral infection, and then Super Easy fire and forget m$ powers that are powerful, but slowly corrupt your system.

This threads been getting a bit quiet over the last few days. We need more posts like lectraplayers, with nifty game ideas. Maybe we could start an UT 2003 mod?? I don't know anything about anything, but i'd be willing to learn the UT editor tools and whatnot. I also know a guy who could probably do textures and music (this guy is so artistic it'll make you sick). What do you think?? Maybe i'm getting ahead of myself here, but i think with some effort we could actually pull something like this off. So any thoughts??

mossy 10-14-2003 12:39 AM

Well like I said - I'd be up to designing some characters nad making them 3D etc. I'm prolly not much good other than that - apart from testing and the odd input.

It would be completely built on 100% linux.

mossy 10-14-2003 12:42 AM

@ lectraplayer - how about little corp execs running around trying to get you or something and when they catch you you get the blue screen flash on screen.

Or something like you gotta crack windows before it bluescreens heh heh. heh heh heh I like that one.

Yeah a 100% Linux built UT 2003 mod. Maybe even get it published retail! And maybe include a windows install disk as an afterthought eh?:D

Do you know anything about how to run a development project mossy? Does anyone? I wouldn't know where to start. You need to get all your ideas together, you need webspace, a website, development team! Wow, this could be a lot harder than i thought!

Anyone who thinks we should do a UT2003 mod(or shouldn't) please post. Anyone have any experience making a mod?? Start slinging ideas around(game ideas, or better yet, how this thing could get done!), if you think this might be a good idea.

May be some of us could get together and work out a really good plot to follow up your original idea (I'm quite imaginative), but I'd also like to put some serousness to the matter and why not, plause-ability. Something like system shock or Deus Ex (somebody stop me dreaming!!!) and have a really good conspiracy theory about this whole Paladium passports thing, etc, etc. (Now I mean it, somebody stop me!!!). Maybe you play the role of a human being but get power-ups and stuff from Tux and friends in the effor to stop the global threat.... *I really have to shut up now*.

For seriousness and plausability, why not take lectraplayers M$/ Bill Gates conspiracy idea and just change the names. That way windows users would be much more likely to play it, and there would be much less chance of being sued for libel (or is it slander?).

Maybe do it on the unreal 2k3 engine?? Maybe could enter the 'Make something unreal' contest. I mean i could sure use a million bucks!

Just a thought mind you. I don't want to go butchering ther original idea.
