drag and drop fails
 

I have installed fedora14 on my laptop.I am not able to drag and drop any file to any folder or drive so that i can copy it.please help..

Can you copy using the cp command from the command line?

What desktop environment are you using? kde? gnome? something else?

Yes i am able to copy using cp command.I am using Gnome desktop.

I have never used Fedora, though I have used CentOS, but I will suggest this for troubleshooting.

1. If you can log in and start Gnome as root, test whether you can drag and drop as root. If you cannot, something is seriously awry.

2. Install another environment, such as KDE or a lightweight window manager such as Fluxbox (my personal favorite). Yum should allow you to grab something else you can use for testing.

3. Choose that for your session and test whether you can drag and drop in a different environment. If you can, that indicates the "awry-ness" is in Gnome, and not in the larger Fedora installation.

This is really odd problem. Please keep me posted.

Thanks for your reply.As you told, i tried drag and drop as a root user.But still it did not work.Then i installed XFCE desktop and tried drag and drop in it too.Here also, no success...is this a bug ?

There are an awful lot of folks using Fedora and I listen to a lot of Linux podcasts, including some by persons who use Fedora, such as Fab from Linux Outlaws.

I suspect that, if this were a general issue, I'd have heard of it somewhere, so I think it's likely not a Fedora bug. A web search also turned up no indication that this is a widespread phenomenon.

If it were me, I would test next by booting to a live CD, such as the Fedora installation CD in live mode or Knoppix, and test drag-and-drop in that. If it worked in the Live CD, I would assume that something had gone screwy in my install. If I had a spare mouse, I would swap out the mouse for one that I knew would drag-and-drop on another computer, just to be careful.

I would also check my mouse settings to make sure there nothing screwy in there, but, I have to say, in 25 years of computing, I don't think I've seen a "disable drag-and-drop" setting.

How does it not work?

When you hold the mouse on something and drag it, does an icon stay under your cursor as you move it? Does the cursor change shape? Does the icon "fly back" to its original place when you let go of the mouse?

ok to make things clear...I downloaded fedora14 from its official website using bittorrent.I had no trouble while installing fedora.I have been using fedora since fedora version 6 was released and this is the first time i am facing this problem.I too searched internet before posting the problem here and found nothing useful on the topic.
My mouse is fine.Besides, i have checked using other mouse and my laptop touchpad also.
Yes the icon stays under the cursor.The cursor changes its shape to that of hand.In gnome after droping the icon just vanishes,nothing is copied.In XFCE it "fly back" to its original position.
There is one more thing i noticed today..
Drag and drop is not working only when i am trying to drop an item to the window that is minimized to the bottom panel.If the window on which the item is to be dropped is just adjacent or behind the current window,drag and drop works.

So you're dropping files in taskbar buttons?

Obviously that won't work, the the application knows nothing about the taskbar button!

I think you didnot get what i said.Usually when you drag an item to the window minimized to the bottom panel it pops up on the screen and then you can drop the item on that popped up window so that the item gets copied.For me the window pops up to the screen but when i drop the item nothing gets copied.I am not dropping item directly to the taskbar but to the window minimized there.

So the window comes up when you hover the dragged item over the taskbar button?

Hi there, I am having the same problem with Fedora 14. It seems to be some kind of bug in either nautilus or gnome panel. I confirm that if the window is "behind" and one does not go through the buttons on the task bar it works. I further noticed that, in my case, if nautilus is not maximized drag and drop will work in all cases as it normally would... Strange! Did you install Fedora 14 as a fresh install or as an upgrade to Fedora 13 (my case). Kind regards, David

Its a fresh installation.have u come around any solution for the same?
