I'm still very new to linux so forgive my confusion with a lot of this stuff, its very new to me. Also sorry about the wall of text in advance. I'm trying to install Deepin onto a flash drive that I can carry around with me and use on random computers (friends and school). I have a 64 gb Sandisk Ultra. It uses USB 3.0 and the speeds are plenty fast to run linux off of. I originally wanted to have 1/2 of it be for linux, 1/2 for NTFS storage. I formatted the flash drive and installed Deepin from a different installation USB. I'm able to boot up, mash F12 and get on Deepin fine the first time. The problem is that as soon as I remove the flash drive and switch over to windows, I lose the boot option for Deepin next time I try to use it. Normally there is an option to boot to "linuxdeepin2014" or something similar to that. But it disappears after I remove the flash drive and re-insert it. It can still see the flash drive and gives me to option to boot from it, but that launches me straight into windows instead of Deepin. I've tried removing the storage partition and just installing Deepin on one partition. Same problem, I can get on once after the install and then once I remove it the boot option disappears. If I use my installation USB to view the flash drive everything is still there and it still has the linux distro on it, I just can't boot to it for some reason.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've been trying for about a week off and on to get it working. Just about at my wits end.
1. You install Deepin 2014 from another USB to your main USB.
2. You are able to boot into Deepin from your main USB successfully once.
3. When you reboot to try again, you are able to select your main USB from the boot devices, but once you select it, Deepin does not start.
If the above is correct, then I need a bit more information.
1. Have you tried a different computer?
2. Is there a reason you specifically want to install Deepin on your main USB, rather than doing a persistent live USB?
3. When you say "But it disappears after I remove the flash drive and re-insert it.", do you mean the menu entry linuxdeepin2014 disappeared, or the USB does not appear at all when you press F12?
4. This one seems silly, but have you tried completely powering off the computer and removing the USB, then re-inserting it and powering on?
I know 4 seems trivial, but I carry around a USB stick for this exact purpose except I just stick with a persistent live USB. I've noticed that if I simply reboot with the drive in the computer, it occasionally doesn't work correctly (I know, weird).
1. Yes.
2. Yes.
3. Yes, I can select it but it goes straight into windows.
1. No other computer to try, only have a macbook besides my desktop.
2. I've tried to get a persistent live but can't get it to work with Deepin. The deepen ISO is the installer, can't find a Live CD version. I tried using the installer ISO but depending on the method I used it would either be unable to installed the persistence file or it would say it installed but it wouldnt be persistent when I tried it.
3. The menu entry linuxdeepin2014 disappears. The USB is still visible but choosing it takes me to windows.
4. I've tried posing on and off, removing and even trying different USB slots, 3.0 and 2.0.
Thanks for any help you can provide or suggestions.
