Circumvent CNR
 

Okay, I like the Linspire as an alternative also, but of course there does not seem to be a CNR coupon, and manually installing Debian packages can be a chore if the software you are trying to install is not already pre-packaged due to software dependencies on external files and scripts. My wife and I found this site:

It will teach you how to circumvent the CNR (cut it off and dump it) and install Synaptic Package Manager which will act as a Debain Package Add/Remove Software Program. Synaptic is commonly used on other Debian flavours of GNU/Linux. It DOES work as this is what we are using as I type this to update the OpenOffice from 1.1.3 to 1.1.4 and install other software we want, like WINE and PPT Viewer, etc.

It's not at all related to Windows. Are you kidding? Linspire is completely linux. They basically made a new theme for KDE, and that's about all I noticed. :D

This old chestnut. Read the GPL and tell us where it says that you cannot charge for any software covered by the GPL.

well at the very least it should be free as in some freedom, linspire is so wrapped around CNR and renamed stuff that there is very little hope of freedom :P

There is nothing in the GPL which says you can't have "non-free" software in Linux. If Linspire are so bad, where were you when SuSE wouldn't open up YAST?

Strange that you allow people on here to say the "good things" about linspire over and over and not add anything useful to the conversation yet I am jumped on because I like to point out the "critical things" over and over not adding anything useful... You don't think people should be informed of both when making a choice?

You're not just saying "critical things" about Linspire--you're spreading falsehoods about it.

Linspire does default to root (which I think is bad), but it also lets you set up a user account as well. You're saying you can't use your system is a normal user--that's simply not true.

You must be very popular in your local supermarket, or is it just Linspire that you jump all over. Some people like it, accept it.

Well.. I will say that i am quite disappointed with it. It really isn't much different than any other distro, not to mention how big of a pain it is to manually install a package without CNR. I have removed it from my computer.

Well Linspire is definetly not for everyone (and M.R. and K.C. even stated that on several occasions themselfs).
Linspire is targetting a specific market and that marked thinks CNR is the best thing since warm water (or how do you say that is English). Basically if you're like me and like to "play" with your system Linspire is not for you. And if you don't want to use CNR it's definetly not for you.
The main reason they created Linspire is because they needed a platform for CNR. They first wanted to ONLY develop CNR, but with the multitude of diffrent distro's and the lack of control over them made it almost impossible for them to do this. Therefore they decided to build Linspire (or LindowsOS as it was originally called). to be a platform for CNR.

I hope you have found a distro that fits you better, some people will try many diffrent distro's before they find the one that's right for them.

What falsehoods am I spreading? If you go to other forums you will see users run into a LOT of problems trying to use lin-pire on a user account. How does that make it a falsehood?

And I do not think I am actually the one that said that but I will stick up for it!

Cloudy is a fairly :) honest guy! If I may ask cloudy a few questions:
Cloudy do you often see problems at other forums with people trying to use lin-pire with a user account? Would you agree it is more of a problem on lin-pire than with a lot of other distros? Hasn't MR himself said that their is nothing wrong with running as root? or was it KC?
