Video games

Seriously, how could anyone live without 'em. They're the best part of life; The meat and potatoes of my soul. I'd go crazy if it weren't for psx. So give me all your vg rants, all the bosses you're stuck on, how every new games in a serious sucks, or whatever the hell you want. I'm stuck on Adel in Final Fantasy VIII, if anyone has any tips.

Whitehat 02-16-2004 10:40 PM

I think you really need to re-think life if Games are the best part of life.

Go do something.

I haven't played FFVIII yet. But the boss you're talking about couldn't possibly be tougher to beat than Emerald Weapon from FFVII :p .

Mega Man X 02-17-2004 12:12 AM

Games the best thing in life heim :) Been there... you definitely need to find something else to do :).
Anyway, www.gamesfaq.com has a hundred of walkthroughs for games, you might find the repetitive Final Fantasy VIII (the history of those games are all similar, you start playing as a though guy, or a mercenary, who does not care about shit, but eventually become a hero, the battle system is old and the musics are the same since FFI.... to name a few) as well in there...

Amen to that! dont get lost in it
but as for the original posting, not the ps or ps2, winXP as valve and id are about to release some serious eye candy games and i tend to poke around in graphics a bit myself

You kidding me? Final Fantasy VIII is the best. Seriously. And yes, I have played most of them. Not directly at you, but I seriously am sick of these diehard ff6 freaks. They're too stupid and hooked on playing "classic rpgs" that they're blind to the greatness of final fantasy viii. Final fantasy viii stands out in terms of gameplay, characters, storyline, and music. I mean it's much better than ff7: Hey look, I'm Cloud. The Designers at Square thought it would be kewl to make me as a potato. Anyway, I'm still mourning over the death of Aeris who nobody really cares about until she dies. Look it's Sepiroth!11!1!. He's going to blow up the world with a meteor1!1!1 Let's go get him! Bam you're dead! The End *99 magazines award ff7 as "da best game eva."*

Seriously, that's what I take of final fantasy 7.

By the way, how is the battle system old? I've yet to see an earlier game with the junction and guardian system. It puts back the strategy in RPGS. The only strategy to beating ff1-7 is: OMG! let's spend the whole game fighting lvl 2 enemies till I reach lvl 100!

How's that any different from sitting around and formulating GREP expressions?
Maybe you should rethink YOUR life, as I'm sure it's dangerous to your health to not play videogames.

Mega Man X 02-17-2004 04:43 PM

Final Fantasy is... a fanboy thing. The musics are repetitive, the battle system is annoying (walk five steps, fight an invisible enemy). The songs are just remakes from all FF series, nothing new. The only thing improved along the years are the graphics... Final Fantasy VII had nice graphics when it was out and everybody thought so... Then came VIII and everybody said wow, FFVII graphics stinks. A PS fanboy is hard to argue with. When PS2 came out, everybody bought because MGS graphics were so cool. Today, Xbox kicks PS2 arses with it's graphics, and PS2 fanboys says: "I didn't buy it because of graphics, I bought because the games apeals more to me"...

I do, understand you like Final Fantasy and everything, but you have to agree that it gets much more attention then it truly deserves. Talking about evolution in the game area, Final Fantasy is nothing but a remake of itselfs with improved graphics. I am quite tired of Square doing male characters which looks like females.... Squall (no personal offense to your nickname), Cloud....

I don't know if you are in Europe, but the Euro releases of Square stinks too. FFX had such small FMV screen which looks like 1/4 of a widescreen video :S.

If there's a game from Square that I take my hat's off for would be Chrono Trigger. Nice battle system which does not take you "out" from the game to play a battle with characters totally different from the ones you are playing with, original sound track, great story, no crappy full motion videos with again, totally different characters that you play in game or fight the dated battle system...

Don't take me the wrong way, I own and finished FFVII (hated when Sephiroth killed Aeris and pretty lame losing her, since she was the second strongest in my team after Cloud), I have FFVIII and I played it a little bit, I thought that Cloud and Squall were way to similar in personality which made it boring right out the box. Regards to the sexy Quistis Trepe though. Seifer, no comments, he plays the bad boy, but at the end he is in love with Squall.... FFIX I have as well, played for 5 minutes. In fact, right after the first battle, which was identical to all Final Fantasies...

I just did not sell those games because, in few years, they will be worthy of good money. As Castlevania SOTN is worthy today (which I also have, but that one dies with me... what great game).

As you see, I have the games, I've played them all, and I'm analyzing it as a non-fanboy. They are ok, dated, but definitely not as good as peoples consider it to be. But them again, I hate Half-Life, and it looks like it's only me on that one too. Half-Life is in my opinion, the worst shooter ever. Inaccurate weapons (the machine gun is so lame, the pistol is more useful), ugly models, crappy story... poor textures, buggy engine. Ok ambient, but no match for Quake I. I only have that one because of Counter-Strike mod, which I also don't like so much anymore :p.

personally i feel that there should be no gerneral forum here, it would stop war posting and fighting

a little extreme i know
:twocents:

XavierP 02-20-2004 03:40 AM

Gill Bates - it is the nature of the General forum to always have disagreements and, dare I say, squabbles. However, as you will see from the above exchange these disagreements can be resolved with humour and/or a little maturity.

If we were to get rid of General, you would probably see these disagreements spill over into the "KDE v Gnome" type threads and that would just get messy.

Oh, and war posters will get stopped - check back over the posts by the mods and you will see that when things get out of hand we will take action. Luckily, LQ is a pretty self regulating place.

And now, back to the topic - I enjoy playing the Star Wars titles on pc and the Silent Hill series on PSx. Wouldn't say that I can't live without them, they are merely an enjoyable interlude from my real life. :)

petercool 02-20-2004 09:13 AM

I don't mean to upset anyone :)

I think xbox sucks because:

1) EXPENSIVE: they have dropped there prices because of Sony kicking their ****

2) LIMITED NUMBER OF GAMES

3) BAD HANDSET

4) COPY OTHER CONSOLES GAMES: for example they copied dead and alive which was first developed for ps2 and what do they do........copy it

5) GRAPHICS AREN'T THAT BRILLANT: yes i know they are sligtly better than ps2

6) MICOROSOFT: evil company

7) EXCLUSIVE DEALS WITH XBOX: just beccause microsoft are the richest company in the world it doesn't mean they should have exclusive deals

8) LOOKS UGLY: a heavy box

9 RUBBISH NAME:

10) MICROSOFT HAVE LIMITED EXPERIENCE ABOUT GAMING

Mega Man X 02-20-2004 10:24 AM

petercool, you could not be more wrong...

1 - Same price as PS2. In fact, it's way cheaper. When and how can you get a new PS2, with a harddrive, 2 games, network card for 180 USD or less... if you like having to buy a memory card right out the box... then it's fine :D. The Xbox is expensive to build, but uncle Bill pays the loss. That has no impact to the end user, since M$ has frikin amounts of money...

2 - The number of games is relative. PS2 has a hole lot more, but many are crappy, specially the very first generation. What is the point having 2.000 games if a few are good. In this matter, the very best one is Nintendo Game Cube, which really wants quality, instead of number of releases. Has anyone ever played "The Crow" to PSone? That is the most lame game ever made by anyone, and proves that Sony only wants release games. A game like that should be forbidden... no kidding. The PS2 graphics are bad, the emotion engine is lame....

3 - The hand control is WAY better then PS2. Unless you are a fighting game hardcore, Xbox is WAY better for racing and shooters. That's a fact. ( indeed, the S-Pad, since the first one was too big). Also, with a cheap adapter, you can easily plug the Dual Shock 2 to the Xbox... and keyboard... and mouse... and scanner.... ;)

4 - Is that so? So then Sony has stolen/copied Castlevania, Street Fighter, Megaman series... all of them were from Super Nintendo which did not appear (or appeared badly) on N64. Same goes to SNK games, as King of Fighters Fatal Fury nd Samurai Shodown. The last two were SNK/NeoGeo and Super Nintendo. Besides, it's lame that japanese companies do not support Xbox. I'm a big Capcom fan, and I'm very upset with them. It's ok to Sony monopolize the console market, but not M$? Lame...

5 - Slightly better? I believe you have not seem the differences of effects used in GTA3 for Xbox and PS2. Xbox has a way more solid FPS, customs sound tracks that you can copy your CD's to the hd, much further draw distances, reflection of vehicles... (very lame on PS2 with the cars appearing from nowhere...). With an monitor adapter, you can go up to 1280x960 with an Xbox... It's MADE to have good graphics. You cannot compare a Rendering machine, multitasking processor(Xbox) with the bad graphics card (which is shared with PS2's processor)... Take a look at the reflections of the today dated Halo... never ever PS2 could handle it.

6 - That is irrelevant, has no impact to the end user.

7 - Once again, you are wrong. In fact, it's ok to Sony monopolize the game marketing with Square exclusive games, but not M$, just because it's M$?... lol.

8 - Xbox surely is big. But it has a lot of stuff inside not found on any other console, as harddrive and network card plus 4 joypad slots (add a multitap to item 1, to make it more expensive as well, since you won't need one with Xbox). If you actually look at the xbox, you see how well built it is. Golden cables, USB for fast response.

9 - That's is once again irrelevant. It has no impact on the console performance or the end user.

10 - Wrong again. Microsoft has a huge story with Games. They made DirectX, which is used by 99% of the games on the shelves. Classics as Flight Simulator, Dungeon Siege and Mechwarrios speaks itselfs. Plus, it's not up to MS exclusively to make the games.....

I could argue with you all day Xbox Vs PS2 (just you review 6,9 and 10, because it makes you look like a PS2 fanboy...ghehe).. Personally, I think GameCube is the coolest to play, with solid FPS and Nintendo quality. But Xbox Vs PS2 is no question. The games and the controls are something to argue with because it's a matter of taste.. The rest are facts, and in facts, Xbox smashes PS2 in each and every single byte as possible...

bejiita 02-20-2004 10:30 AM

just remember not to use physical attacks. you'll end up harming rinoa. single enemy targeted magic works best. ive already beaten the game. have fun with Ultimecia/Griever and her castle... LOL

acid_kewpie 02-20-2004 10:46 AM

I think xbox rocks because:

1) I can get an ethernet ready 733mhz 10gb machine with built in USB and graphics adapter for £55 a throw, and stick linux on them in a synch and get a cluster for next to nothing.

2) kinda irrelevant i think....

Mega Man X 02-20-2004 10:48 AM

I don't think acid_kewpie is a gamer :p

XavierP 02-20-2004 10:51 AM

I dunno, he appears to be playing with this thread..... ;)

PS2 all the way - MS/XBox tried to get the Silent Hill series - but we got it back.

Bwahahahaha!

acid_kewpie 02-20-2004 10:52 AM

i like gaming,

the game i like it THSP / THUG.

it is good

all other games are drab and forgettable.

Gill Bates 02-20-2004 11:43 AM

all the boxes have their advantages, none are brilliant at everything, eg game cube has some deadly looking games(that have a great shelf life in ur house - i still play my N64 with my family using 4 contorllers :)) but when games are ported from ps2 to it u can see where it falls behind, the games that are developed specifically for it however, look way better.
the ps2 has got some great games too & can double up nicely as a dvd,
the XBox has only got a few great games, but there is a couple games that would make me want to own 1 of them things that simply dont come on others - same with the other 2 i guess.

Mega Man X 02-20-2004 01:32 PM

Gill Bates has very good points. If you don't own the three consoles (which rarely somebody does, or even if does, it's hard to afford so many games) you will miss something... I, as a costumer, feel very upset with exclusivity of some titles. It's obvious that Mario should appear only on Nintendo platforms, and Sonic only on Sega Platforms (when they were into hardware...), but to the rest of the games, made by other companies, as Silent Hill(Konami), Resident Evil(Capcom), Tomb Raider (Eidos), damit even Halo (Bungiee), should appears on all platforms, as long as the console would handle a descent convertion, not graphically, but keeping up the game style and fun factor. Look at GTA3/Vice City. It's clearly better on Xbox, then PS2 or even PC (seriously), but it's just as fun to play on any of those platforms. It's the same missions, the same characters, with a few graphics improvements. Yet the very same game. This made all players, who owns any of the platforms happy. The manufacture(Rockstar) got 3 more times the money they would get making the game exclusive and 3 more times peoples happy. Why on Earth Capcom (soon releasing another game of my hero, Megaman X 7 to PS2), Konami (soon releasing a new kicking ass Castlevania to PS2) and other companies makes game exclusively to a single platform, is beyond my comprehension.... Sure, exclusive games and characters should exist, otherwise would be pointless to exist more then one console. It's up to the console manufacture to make the console more attractive (exclusive games made by the company, as MS, Sony or Nintendo with it's "mascots", prices, adding new hardware, support, making a nice graphics card, or putting something other consoles does not have, as a hard-drive...), but not holding titles. Look, for example, the Resident Evil "remakes" to Nintendo Gamecube. They hold the titles for those remakes, yet, Resident Evil series got famous on Sony consoles (PSX). Sure, they made appearance on PC's, Saturn (RE1) and even N64(RE2), but the golden versions were at PSone. Still, Nintendo got those remake titles exclusively... is there anything more lame then that?

At the end, with this unfair tactics of making business, the only ones affected are we, end costumers, who pays a huge (and unfair) amount of money(games are the most expensive entertainment around, more expensive then CD's, DVD's, theaters...etc) for a game/platform and have to wait for the release of our favorite game (if ever) in our platform of choice... lame...

trickykid 02-20-2004 01:37 PM

I think one of the best games ever was Worms Armageddon when I did play games occasionally. Well, at least for the PC that is. You just can't beat blowing up your opponents with the Holy Bomb and such.. ;)

Living with my ex-roomates, we'd spend countless, mindless and wastless hours of our life playing that damn game.. ;)

Cheers

I don't remember that game, at least not by name :(. Hey, HERO (atari2600) was quite addictive :). Today we all know how non-anatomic Atari sticks were, but somehow, I think it fits perfectly with Atari's games :). I wish I still had mine though :)

witeshark 02-20-2004 11:27 PM

Well gaming is clearly the main separation between doz and 'nix. But for some reason I always separated games and *the box* -- maybe it's because if I was gaming - it was in the arcade kickin an hour or so at a time on whatever Mortal Kombat was in there :p - I never liked PC or home game deck controllers much. :)

Gill Bates 02-21-2004 08:14 AM

Oh my G-d it's the first thread that actually answered my question. Amazing. Yeah, I never really focused on leveling up so Squall is highest at lvl 42. Pretty pathetic, I'd get the Lionheart but I'm not even able to stand 1 second on the island closest to hell. Why can't I use physical attacks though? They only hurt one person. I have an idea, but don't know if it's possible. Could I junction Rinoa with 100% immunity to lightning for instance and pound away with Quezacotl?
