For the slowness of KDE and Gnome, I only really notice it when I loading the desktop manager. It takes a while to load KDE or Gnome on my 1.7ghz computer, but loading XFCE4 takes a handful of seconds. I do like having menus, like in KDE, but then again, I don't use too many programs, so I can fit most of my programs on the launch bar for XFCE. I also like the simplicity (I know it's overused, but for me it's true) of only having the shortcuts on one launch bar, vs having to go through 3+ branches in menus. Granted, in KDE and Gnome I know you can create shortcuts so you don't have to go through the menu system, but there's just something I like about XFCE4 over KE and Gnome. Gnome is very similar to OSX, and the main problem with those two for me is that I'm just not used to them. I use them at school, but I never get the chance to get under the hood and dig around in them....
