I want GMAIL

Hi guys,

I dunno if any one else here access to gmail, but if anyone indeed has access, can you please refer me so that I too can get to use it :)

My mail id is (UltimaGuy at linux.net) for any contacts.

Please, any one help me...

XavierP 05-14-2004 02:50 AM

2 seconds with (surprisingly) Google and https://gmail.google.com/?dest=http%...le.com%2Fgmail

Though why anyone would want Google reading their mail so they can give you ads is absolutely beyond me.

UltimaGuy 05-14-2004 03:20 AM

Well, XavierP, nowadays every mail provider reads your mail, either to check for spam or viruses. So, I don't have a problem for Google reading my mail. Also, if you use Yahoo mail, you'll know that the ads take about 1/3rds to about 2/3rd of the screen space. In gmail, the ads are small ads that are relevant to the message, so I welcome them :)

Again, if any one has a gmail account, can you please refer me :)

XavierP 05-14-2004 05:02 AM

Hmm. Agreed your mail is scanned for viruses, but I don't want my provider scanning my mail in order to direct ads at me. And what happens when your box gets spammed? Surely that would mean that Google thinks you want more advertising just like it...... stand by for directed marketing featuring dating sites, viagra, "licensed" medicines and lots and lots of pr0n. :)

News story about gmail and Yahoo!: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/05...financial_day/

UltimaGuy 05-15-2004 02:32 AM

Well, each one has his own options... I don't mind ads at all if I get a good storage space and if the ads does not disturb me.. like the ones from Yahoo.

Also, I prefer ads that are related to the subject, instead of flash ads asking whether I want to marry or not :)

Most free webmail providers already parse your mail for ad-relavent content. They just haven't been up front with it. Thats like saying don't use ICQ because their disclaimer says its not secure, but using msn, aim, or yahoo IM believing that you're safe. They just don't tell you up front - but its in the TOS.

The only way to avoid that is to send your own encrypted mail from your own server.

What about a free hushmail e-mail account where you can send an encrypted e-mail from your hushmail e-mail account to another hushmail user's account without fooling around setting up any of the various e-mail encryption programs out there?

dave_starsky 06-30-2004 02:13 PM

I don't really mind them reading my email, since they're not actually ever read by a human being.

I just saw this picture, top notch ad matching from google :D

Good idea, but still you use someone else's server for your email. I was talking about guarantees.

I don't know if anyone has figured this out yet, but I think the big media attention regarding Google and privacy has been created to cause news, rather than report it. All free email providers have the wherewithall to parse your email. They are all equally able to do with that as they please. Most TOS say that your email is their property, in a way (ever read the eula for incredimail?). My point is that this is not a Google/privacy issue. I use Yahoo! mail ,as its been free for years and they don't block me from clicking on a URL my friend directs me to, like Hotmail (reading your email???). Are they angels about privacy? No! They will plant web bugs in your email (they admit to it in their privacy agreement). They are more likely to invade your privacy than Google (for marketing purposes). This is not an issue about how bad Google is.

Its a means to print a news story. The time was finally right to cause a stir, obviously.

Luantum 06-30-2004 10:51 PM

I have Gmail! I don't use it for any real purpose. I just won it on the net in a forum.

option94 07-09-2004 01:20 PM

I've been using gmail for a couple of weeks now, and I havn't even noticed the ads. I completly forgot they were even suposed to be thier until i started reading this forum. If anyone is worried about people reading thier email, they should just send snail mail. Every free web mail service scans the emails to market ads. Im convinced thats how they are able to provide a free service. Of course thiers a good chance that i'm wrong, but thiers a chance that im right. Gmail also offers a gig of storage. nobody here seemed to want to recognise that fact yet. thats what your getting for google letting a computer scan your email so they can put ads that you wont even notice unless you look for thm.

jeremy 07-09-2004 03:21 PM

I gave one away here - http://jeremy.linuxquestions.org/

If you keep an eye out, I _may_ do it again ;)

Mostly all of us want gmail. Soon enough it will be out and all of us will be able to get it when we want to. Just wait a few weeks

Joey.Dale 08-30-2004 03:55 PM

Who wants gmail

Hi all,

Here's the deal, I have one gmail invite that I will give away right here in this thread. The catch, to get this invite, you must find out and post (with all work) the amount of heat is generated by a normal sized hampster over its lifetime, and this must be in BTU's.

Good Luck.

-Joey

p.s. I have done the math and have an ~answer.

crabboy 08-30-2004 04:39 PM

I've got an invite for the first two people with the wrong answer.

Dark_Helmet 08-30-2004 05:33 PM

Quite a challenge :)

I'll take a (not so serious) crack at it by playing a word game:

Total heat generated by a hamster = 0 BTU

Word game #1)
Heat is one form of energy. In a closed system, energy is conserved. Thus, any heat generated by the hamster was derived from energy of another form (chemical or kinetic energy for example). Over time, the heat "loss" from conversion will be converted to other form(s) of energy. So, as time approaches infinity, the amount of heat generated by the hamster that still remains as heat approaches 0.

Word game #2)
The hamster doesn't actually generate heat. Energy cannot be created :)

Those are two nice beat-around-the-bush answers you would probably see on an exam when the student has no frickin' clue how to solve it.

smith847be 08-30-2004 11:34 PM

Anyone want a Gmail invite?

Alright, because anyone using Linux has to be good, I'll offer up my Gmail invites that I just got on here. I have 6 invites, and they will go to the first 6 people to post their favorite somewhat-obscure program for Linux (i.e. Firefox, OpenOffice, or XMMS are not obscure and do not count). There's so much software out there, I want some names of more good stuff for my computer.

crabboy 08-31-2004 12:51 AM

I didn't even attempt to solve it. I thought I'd just help make the loosers feel a little better.

masand 08-31-2004 12:56 AM

thanks for this thread...

Nz_Boy_2004 08-31-2004 01:54 AM

I use rox session for enviroment, i like the mr photohead game, and i use tplayer and noone else does lol.

Dark_Helmet 08-31-2004 02:57 AM

I don't think it's extremely popular, but I really like gnump3d. It's a Perl script that can be configured to stream your mp3 library over a dynamicaly-generated web page. So, if you have web access, you can listen to anything you own. It's even got user/password protection in case you're afraid someone might stumble across it. It's also configurable to listen to a specific port. So if you do have a regular web server running, move gnump3d to another port, and you can access both.

I think there was another piece of software I looked at that did the same thing: Brunhilde. At the time, I either couldn't get it to compile/install/work and gave up on it since gnump3d worked out-of-the-box.

For nostalgia entertainment (while downloading), there's always XScorch. It's a clone of that good ol' Scorched Earth game for DOS.

Dark_Helmet 08-31-2004 03:09 AM

Well, I was worried my response would be a "thread killer" when all I was trying to do was add a little humor. So, I went looking to try and find a legitimate answer. I figured body heat generation for mammals is pretty consistent (perhaps that's fallacy #1), and that it's dependent upon weight and possibly height (perhaps fallacy #2). The only information I could find after doing a number of searches through Google was that the human body generates 25,000 BTUs of body heat. As any movie buff knows, that's from "The Matrix" and it's dangerous to use anything in a movie as fact. So, having no other recourse, I started looking for average weights of a hamster, and average weights of people, figuring it would be a simple proportion. Well, everything I found gave too much information. I found average weights for adolescent and mature hamsters (and both were given as weight ranges), and there is no "average" human weight. It too, is separated into adolecent, mature, elderly, gender, and BMI ranges.

So, I gave up :)

Hopefully if my previous post was a thread killer (I was going for "creativity" points), then this one makes amends. So, all you thermodynamics or biology gurus step up to the plate.

heema 08-31-2004 03:37 AM

i liked the challenge of this thread so i will give it a go :)

it will be an estimate of around 22,994.998547 Btu

could i give a link that will give a hint ??

heema 08-31-2004 03:46 AM

i use ScummVM to play old adventure games like Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Sam and Max

i use a program called kid3 to easily tag multiple MP3 files

SciYro 08-31-2004 03:47 AM

heat generated i believe is dependent on the metabolism of animals, higher metabolism the more heat generated i think it was ..... just to give people a hint (I'm not board enough to try or even estimate this)

mikeshn 08-31-2004 08:15 AM

I have Gmail invitations. Let me know, if you want one free.

Joey.Dale 08-31-2004 09:43 AM

I love Celestia , it's a 3D space simulator.

Quote:

Celestia is a free real-time space simulation that lets you experience our universe in three dimensions. Unlike most planetarium software, Celestia doesn't confine you to the surface of the Earth. You can travel throughout the solar system, to any of over 100,000 stars, or even beyond the galaxy. All travel in Celestia is seamless; the exponential zoom feature lets you explore space across a huge range of scales, from galaxy clusters down to spacecraft only a few meters across. A 'point-and-goto' interface makes it simple to navigate through the universe to the object you want to visit.

sh1ft 08-31-2004 10:29 AM

ipkungfu

It's my favorite script for configure iptables and is really easy without being much more than a bunch of config files.

crabboy 08-31-2004 10:52 AM

4 ounce hamster burns 40 calories per day.
Using 2 years as average lifespan we get 29,200 calories per life.
1 calorie = 0.00396 btu

115.632 btu/lifetime

Joey.Dale 08-31-2004 10:56 AM

close but the calories we eat/burn and the ones used to measure heat are not the same, but you win, please email me wheree you want the invite sent

Joey.Dale 08-31-2004 10:58 AM

Also there are two more else where that I am giving away. Good luck finding them.

-Joey

crabboy 08-31-2004 11:13 AM

How'd I win if my conversions were wrong?

Plus, I have more invites than I know what to do with. You'll have to have another contest.. ;|

XavierP 08-31-2004 11:18 AM

* XavierP leaps on to the bandwagon *

I have 6 also, I'm getting them quicker than I can give them away. So when Joey.Dale and Crabboy have exhausted theirs, I have 6 to get rid of. See the email button, clicky clicky :)

Gmail invites

I have 2 gmail invites to give away.

Moderators do not move this to general. I'm a slack user and want to give them to slack users.

XavierP 08-31-2004 01:03 PM

Nice - but this isn't a Slack specific question is it? Moved to General.

XavierP 08-31-2004 01:32 PM

I now have 5 left.

trey85stang 08-31-2004 02:09 PM
