Hello,

Even if this a Linux forum most people seem to have dual boot. So this may be of interest.

I'd like to point a couple of things out:

I used 98LitePreview to install win98Se without IE or OE, and to strip Windows Explorer rather bare so that it is faster. unfortunately I don't have a 95 CD (edition before the OCR) so couldn't use some cab files in it to strip win explorer even thinner.

True bits of IE lurks somewhere in the registry, but no programs sees IE as existing So you're safe I should think.

If I were you I wouldn't hesitate and would rush and buy XPLite, especially if your Windoz is in US -- xxLite is less radical for windows that are in other languages.

True you wouldn't be able to buy Norton -- I think it is rather an advantage! There are good and free anti-virus apps anyway -- and without IE, and with mozilla instead you don't give viruses such a chance.

your system would be smaller, neater and faster.

True, no autmotaic updates. But what of it? XP automatic updates often wreak people's computers! You can update manually and choose what's good for your system. Look for Erpman's page : it's an excellent guide to all the available M$ updates. If you no longer have IE you'll need far less updates.

I used Erpman's page to get updates for my win98SE, only recently. My only difficulty was that my M$ version is in French and Erpman's links to US files. Yet I managed to find the FR files -- some files have no language attached anyway.

I must say 98Lite has made windows quite acceptable -- still very boring though. Linux is much more exciting!

Cheers,

I recall , it claimed to be able to remove IE from your system without harm....

That program was renamed to iEradicator, and is now MacOS's official spyware removal tool. (j/k)
