Habitual, you must have never seen a flash drive.

I got no signs the drives were failing, they just quit. I don't recall the exact symptoms, it was years ago, but the drive just wasn't recognized when connected, IIRC. I lost the data, but it was just music and I didn't try very hard to recover it. The hardest part of the replacement process was reading the serial number off the drive. I had to get a good magnifying glass and a strong light. SanDisk required the number for replacement, and it was very hard to see. I didn't know it at the time, but every SanDisk drive has a serial number. Now that I think about it, those were microSD cards that failed. They also have serial numbers.

I have a Kingston Datatraveler, and it has a light. Not very bright, but there is a light. Perhaps some models don't have them. The lights are handy for seeing which drive is being accessed, and for seeing if it's being recognized by the system, and other stuff.

Thanks for the details.
Now we know what kind of lack of response to expect from a usb memory stick when it's failing.

Lexar JumpDrive P20 USB 3.0 Flash Drive looks pretty good with some fast speeds.

And it's metal case.

Sounds like you have a plan.-:)

I have one Lexar Jump Drive and it works great.
The steel casings are good. The one I have is an older one but it still works.

I kicked the 2.0 drives to the curb. 3.0 is faster by far and the file transfer rate is fast.

All of my flash drives are 2.0.

I keep them because I hate wasting anything.
