I shall balance 3 Windows rants, 3 Windows raves, 3 Linux Rants and 3 Linux raves for great Justice.

##RAVES##

Windows
- Games. Yeah, yeah, Wine and DOSBox, but the reality is, gaming is infinitely better on Windows.
- Hardware support. Any piece of hardware you buy will pretty much without exception have Windows drivers. Linux, not so much (but our faithful Kernel hackers are getting there!)
- You can customize it more than we sometimes think. How many Windows people do you know who have any idea what RegEdit is?

Linux
- It's faster. Just so much faster.
- It lends itself to being a phenomenal development environment.
- Comparability and choices. Name the first five Linux DEs off the top of your head. Great, now name the first five Windows DEs off the top of your head. How about alternate shells for Windows? No? Alternate shells for Linux? csh zsh dash ash busybox bash sh psh yes! My point is, you can replace every single component of your OS in Linux

##RANTS##

Windows
- Slow. Windows compared to any other OS, proprietary or Free, is inexcusably slow.
- Viruses. Lots of free software for Windows, just not all of it does the user intend to install. You know how to secure a Windows box? Turn it off.
- $$$. You want home? http://www.microsoft.com/windows/buy...e-premium.aspx Boom. $120. But you're serious, aren't you? http://www.microsoft.com/windows/buy...-ultimate.aspx $220

Linux
- Fun new hardware toys? Right off the assembly line? Sorry, looks like you'll be waiting another 6 months until the drivers are written up.
- Some Free software has pretty dumb UI design/artwork. We hackers excel at writing code, but sometimes a big company can be the best way to make things intuitive and efficient.
- It can be hard. Linux can be hard. Linux can be scary. Some new Linux users are scared of the command line. Some more experienced Linux gurus can forget about the new Linux users and give a bash solution to every problem.

##IN CONCLUSION##

Windows has been around for quite a while, and the problems it suffers aren't being solved, they're getting worse. Linux has overcome quite a few hurdles. (Remember the days of the browser wars, really hard installations, and worse hardware support?) We can fix Linux. We can't fix Windows. In my opinion, this is why Linux will always be my number 0 choice.

Windows

But when you do customise windows, you nearly always break it - unless you are really a pro. And when you break it, it usually affects the whole system. Not so much with Linux.

##RANTS##

Linux
experienced Linux gurus can forget about the new Linux users and give a bash solution to every problem.

Your right. There needs to be some balance here, and some encouragement (I mean actual encouragement) to use the command line. It is much more powerful than most GUIs.

##IN CONCLUSION##
.... Linux will always be my number 0 choice.

.....

I like your use of the Binary system:). Why should we be intimidated by a machine whose chief talent is that it can count from 0 to 1 real fast, and back again?

PS: I just noticed that my comments interspersed with yours came out as if it were all a quote.

I am here to ask a different question, what if ReactOS is correct?

Does Linux even apply to the desktop? Sure we've come a long way but will we ever make it?
What if this is the one factor World Domination 201 overlooked? (link)

Edit: I Just Saw That This Was Page 100!

desktop by another name, aka MAC.

all you need to do is market a desktop by another name, same as they did with "the Cloud", etc. same shiat, just another name, etc.

if you could build hardware that supports linux and is 30% cheaper than the other hardware that winbloze needs, you might have a better chance.

"Any piece of hardware you buy will pretty much without exception have Windows drivers."

Really? Not in my experience.

Same here. I have also installed drivers but they no longer work and new ones are not available. My brother bought a Canon camera and uses XP. We can't get the software to access the camera even tho it uses ptp and the software installed fine. This is back when XP was current by the way. It sees it as a hard drive but can't seem to get any further. All the Canon cameras have had the same connection type since I don't even know when.

Think the camera is broke? Plugged it into my linux box, downloaded the pics, burnt them to a CD and took them back in less time than I spent messing with it on winders. As soon as my brother gets rid of his Lexmark printer, he's switching to Linux. I already got it installed on a second drive. I did that so he could see how it works. About all he does is check email and his wife plays farmville on facebook. They both play card games which Linux has PLENTY of.

One of the things I like about Linux is: It's not Windows! I don't care if it is not cutting-edge (although it can be!); I don't care if it seems "1970s-ish" (it isn't!)- as long as it works; it's different and it offers an alternative to Windows/Mac......I'm happy. The fact that it WORKS is the main thing. The others are nice fringe-benefits.

Heh....I know the Canon camera thing all too well, too! Used to have a Canon that worked fine with Win98- when I switched to Vista, there were no workable drivers available, and the camera became useless. Had to get rid of it (It was time anyway...it was obsolete...but still going for good money on the used market). I tend to keep things that work well a long time- I don't want to have to get all new stuff just because my OS is no longer supported, and I had to switch to a new one, for which there are no drivers for my stuff. Luckily, with Linux, I don't foresee that as being an issue. Another problem solved.

I just noticed two very Important things are falling into place at the same time:
Windows is going to change too much in too little time and will collapse around itself, if this where to happen alone OSX would get an upswing but Linux, for commercial uses no, Windows would have A few important pieces of software behind it but the next thing happening at the same time will change this:
Microsoft Office now works well under Wine! Microsoft Office seems to be the one thing standing in between many people I know and Linux. Just because of company standards.

Now for the downsides for the two:
First and foremost and most important: ReFS Microsoft has officially made windows support 8 filesystems! (ReFS, NTFS, FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, exFAT, iso9660, UDF) but what if ReFS has some features set into it that make it like XFS, un resizable.
Not to mention the mess that wine will have getting metro working.

Windows, From Here On Out, Will Be In A Position To Fail, But Will Be Too Stuck Up To Do It.
One Day ReactOS Will Be Correct; Windows Will Suffer From A Mass Virus And There Won't Be Any Variety To Stop It.

Got stuck in a driver install loop just the other day with 7. An Asus soundcard, not some unnamed piece of junk. Installed the driver, rebooted and windows says the driver is not present. Run the installer again, it says the driver is already installed. Reboot windows it says driver not present. And around and around you go. Nightmare.

Had to actually remove my graphics card for the sound card to register, then replace the graphics and all was well.

Same problem with Linux? Ooo, that'll be a no.

Had the same issue as you with cheapy camera's the kids got for christmas. Windows refused to talk to them even with the driver. Plugged into ubuntu, worked a treat.

Its amazing how people blindly repeat propaganda like this.

Linux' Linus calls Apple's file system 'complete and utter crap,' worse than Windows

Some days, it’s just not fair. You know you’re going to post something that’s going to have the fanboys heads spinning, you don’t want to hurt their precious necks, but true journalistic integrity requires you light a flame and watch it burn.

This is one of those days. Apparently, Linus Torvalds, creator of Linux, just gave a speech Down Under. In it, he compared Linux with Windows and OS X. The phrase you’re all going to enjoy is this one:

I this may be dumb questions but I'm not sure what he means by Linux file system is better than windows or OS X.Or does he mean that windows and OS X is bloated the file system ?

cascade9 05-15-2012 05:09 AM

nec207, why are you posting flamebait, apple related stuff which dates back to 2008 on a 'Windows v Linux' thread?

As for why Linus feels that the OSX file system sucks...search for the original post Linus made, IIRC he goes into some detail about why he thinks that (its fairly technical).

I've heard in the news that OSX had some virus issues lately. Ummm, isn't macs supposed to be immune to viruses. I think not...

If you are talking about the one a few weeks ago, it was actually flash that had the problem if I understood the problem correctly. Of course, what else is new when it comes to security problems with flash. Flash has always had security problems. I don't recall ever seeing a version that didn't have a security problem. That's whether it is run on windoze, Linux or a Mac.

Actually it was Java. The exploit was already closed in newer versions of Java, but Apple somehow have not upgraded the Java version of MacOS X to that newer version.
