No, I haven't been round again yet. When I do, I'll have to see how far he wants to go. The first priority will be to buy a pen drive and get those pictures backed up. They aren't safe on such a f***ed-up system. We can boot from SystemRescue to find out where they actually are and copy them all. Then we can discuss the way to go. The simplest solution would be for his son to just reinstall Windows for him and then reload the pictures. He uses that machine so little, it hardly matters what OS it runs. But he can have Linux if he's game and we can confirm that all his card games have Linux equivalents.
