I've posted what I did and what happened. I just wish I had been able to make a screenshot of the initial error I got. I couldn't find any posts related to the issue and I didn't want to wait, so I reformatted and started from scratch.

The only thing is the Firstboot error. Apparently it's insignificant anyway.

I've never had a 64bit installation - Windows or otherwise - that I didn't run into some kind of problems with, be it software compatibility, drivers or installation issues. I've done several Fedora 11 32bit installs without issue. Then I try this 64bit install... I've been using various Red Hat distributions since Red Hat 7. Never had anything like this happen. And the auto-update service has never worked...

One of my biggest pet-peeves has been Gnome. I don't care if it looks like Vista or not, I just wish it would actually keep your customized choices the way you set them.

True - I hadn't addressed that earlier, but firstboot is a config assistant that only runs once (you can guess when). You'd learn more by doing everything it does on your own (and perhaps more importantly, you'd learn how to change those settings at any time).

Sounds like you've made up your mind about 64-bit anything, and that's too bad because you are almost certainly wrong - how do you explain the fact that lots of people run 64-bit if it's got so many problems? Correlation does not imply causation, and that's extra-likely to be true with systems as complex as these.

Windows took a while to get up to providing meaningful 32-bit compatibility. Linux is not Windows and AFAIK has never had one.

I'm sorry, now I'm losing you. What does a network service have to do with 32-/64-bit? Don't make 64-bit operating systems the scapegoat here; they honestly aren't that different.

Be careful about assuming a bug or bad design decision. I've been using Gnome for years (not that I really love it or anything) and I assure you, mine does this. Feel free to start a thread to diagnose that problem.

Nor have you. I'm just worried you're coming away from this with the impression that 64-bit support is immature or fundamentally buggy or something. I hate to have nothing better to give you than 'I know better than you', but without specifics of your other problems, I can't say what the true cause was, just that '64-bit did it!' doesn't make sense. The point about LINW is that, for a long time, running 64-bit Windows signed you up for a host of problems, whereas Linux has handled the transition as smoothly as it could. Is this on any unusual hardware or something?

Nope.

MSI motherboard w/ 4gigs of ram. I installed Fedora 11 on it 3 times and each time got the Firstboot error. The first install was the only one that had a large hardware error.
