Out of casual interest, how did OpenOffice etc do it with stuff like Word documents. Was it just a lot of (am I allowed to say it?) reverse engineering? That must have been a hell of a lot of hard work.
Word, PowerPoint, and Excel format were reverse-engineered- yes. They don't have as stringent a license on them and so they are legally able to be opened by other office products.
And yes, it's like swimming uphill I would imagine. OpenOffice uses the XML standard format by default so anybody can interoperate with it.
In order to view popular project plan documents (MPP, MPX, MSPDI, PLANNER) try free online viewer - Ganttzilla (www.ganttzilla.com).
All You need is just a web browser.
If you have a MS Project license you could always try and download wine. I use wine with a decent amount of video games that need to be run in a windows.
