I never bothered with the md5 check sum. The self test program on the cd or dvd is equivalent. To pass, the check sum on the cd and the calculated check sum have to match. It would be 1 chance in a billion for both the check sum and the actual calculated check sum to both be corrupt and match.

In my opinion, it's well worth doing an md5sum on the isos before you burn them (assuming you got them from ftp or http, as opposed to rsync or bittorrent), because you can save yourself from wasting a lot of CDs if the download itself was corrupt.

Also, this note might be of some interest.

I downloaded FC5 from torrent and burned from ISO using Nero. But none of my DVD did work. All the time it says media check failed. Even I tried with "linux ide=nodma" but to no avail. I already wasted 5 DVDs and now going to ge t a DVD RW. The SHa1sum did matched with the actual one.

Now I am downloading again from a local mirror using wget. I will try this one and will let you know what happens. If I dont get back, that will mean it worked.

Please do the following:

Boot from your DVD. Very soon, a simple screen will ask if you want to test your dvd, click on yes.

The installer will check the DVD contents the same way you do the testing, but it tests what it knows it may install, and if it finds an error, then truly your DVD is in problem.

If it passes the install scan, then your DVD is ok for using to install Core5.

If you plan to reburn a DVD, do so at the slowest speed. Not at the highest speed that Nero will tend to choose.

Please download your DVD iso image to disk, and do not attempt to install directly from the net, and then with only with the burner going, write your DVD at the slowest speed (x2).
