Fedora FC4 install problems

Hi Guys
I have been running Radhat9 for a few years and kept on running some small compatability problems. The guys advised that I either update or upgrade. I read a bit about the options and decided to download the full FC4. I did this successfully, but the CD's are now not recognized when I try to boot install from them. The Bios setting is set for "boot with CD". When I look at the old Redhat CD and explore it, I can see many files and folders (that are used to boot into the install mode), but this CD has only one file "FC4-i386-disc1.iso" I cannot open it to reveal any of the files for installing. Can I open this or not? In Windows XP this file is associated with my CD writing program (although I did not choose this). In Redhat the properties state "unknown format" Advice please. Hein Enslin

Are you saying you have the single .iso file on the CD? If so, you burned it wrong. In whatever cd burner you're using, you have to select the option to burn the image to the disc - rather than copy the image file to the disc.

Hi this213
Thanks for reply, but When I downloaded these files from fedora, they downloaded as one file, and this is how I burnt them, thinking that it's a new way of presenting the product to me. Yet I must have done something wrong. When I hit the .iso I want, on page "http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/4/i386/iso/" It gives me one file only - as one package. How do I "unzip" this before I burn it onto a CD? Can you help me find my mistake?

thanks

When burning the CD, you want to burn an image file. What burning prog are you using?

michaelk 03-04-2006 09:50 AM

An ISO file is a binary image of a CD. XP can not natively create a CD from an ISO image. If you do not have Roxio or Nero you can download a free ISO creator.

If using Nero or Roxio

Burning iso images onto CD

Thanks guys

I downloaded Alex Feinman's isorecorder and it worked. However, Only disks 1 and 2 worked, and pass the fedora CD test. Disks 3 and 4 keeps on failing the CD test. I have re- downloaded the files about 5 times now. I also tried reducing the burning speed to 4x, with no success. Thank you Hein Enslin

Did you check the md5sums on the iso files before you burned them? This would save you having to redownload them, if the md5sum is correct then the file is perfectly OK. If the file is corrupt, you could try using rsync to fix it, which checks which parts of the file are wrong and only re-downloads those parts. If you're downloading in Windows, rsync is available via Cygwin.

I seem to remember hearing that the FC4 media check is buggy though, so it's entirely possible that your CDs are perfectly OK but are still failing the check.

iso images onto CD

Thanks Gethyn

I am now attemting to understand how to test the md5sums and the rest to follow. Good news though and I will attempt the install

Will let you guys know.

Once you get the flavour of core4, wait about 10 days, and fedora core5 will be out. I have been testing core5 and it flies, it has some very very nice features, and better performance.

Fedora Core 4 ????

Dear Leslie
Thanks it sounds like good news. I have now downloaded FC4 i386 DVD.iso as well. My PC cannot burn DVD's, so I did it on a friend's. Yet the bad news is that even the DVD cannot pass the media test. I am starting to get fed up with Fedora now. Do you think FC5 will be better? Or do you know how I could get hold of a proper tested copy?

I grew to enjoy Redhat 9, although it had some draw backs. Now maybe I should look at other distros??

regards

Dont blame Fedora

You have a problem in these areas:

a) You burned the CD/DVD at too high a speed for your hardware reader
b) You had a communication error, and therefore have a corrupt CD/DVD
c) You are using cheap media, which has microscopic holes on the film layer, leading to bad sectors.

Can you test the media on another reader? It will not do installs t'il you go past the test phase. If the media passes the test on another PC, then you have the answer to the problem.

If the media passes the test on the other system, duplicate the CD/DVD by burning a new one at the slowest speed possible (1x or 2x)

Fedora - downloads

Thanks to every one trying to help. But I even tried now to download and burn on another machine. NO LUCK. On the CD side the disks 3 and 4 keep on failing the media test. I even attemted to install. Even that crashes. Furthermore, I downloaded the DVD fedora core 4. No luck, this also fails the media check.

I am not sure what to think now?

hope to hear soon

Think I'd follow Lsatenstein's advice and try FC5, as it comes out on Wednesday. Not long to wait, and you may have more luck with it.

your cd / dvd problem

I still believe you have a download corruption problem. I downloaded the 5 cd's for core4, and ran the tests. No test failed.

I then downloaded the dvd, burned a copy, and again, when I ran the test, it passed. It was the the dvd that I redid the core4 install.

I redid the initial install as it was my learning exercise. The second install is still going precisely and without any errors detected on my part.

Core5 also downloaded without errors. March 20 is now the core5 date, as they complete some last minute details.

While download corruption is a possible cause, I got the impression that the OP said he had checked the iso files with md5sum.

These days I always try to download isos via rsync or bittorrent, because these methods check the download as it goes and correct any corrupted parts.
