OK, the bathory solution seems durable and the way to go (got a new kernel today so had to reboot) unless this message comes back to haunt me. Redeclaring the thread [SOLVED] thanks to all of your valuable assistance.

Will you have to update the version number manually in the user.js file every time you update Firefox?

It is due to this that I no longer set this machine to report as Debian even though it is running Sid and has been since I built it.

I didn't need to use a user.js -- my method from post #2 seems to persist.

I'll post this to check...

EDIT: Yep lovely Debian swirl present & correct

I wonder why it doesn't persist for you.

Sorry, yes, to be more complete I can change my user agent through the config page in Firefox but it doesn't update for the version of Firefox I am using or the version of the OS and, since I'm on the nightly Firefox channel and suing Sid, this would mean more manual updates than I am prepared to make in order for my icon here to be correct.

Some things MAN was not meant to understand. This is known as the Puzzle of Debian aka Murdoch's Mystery. Or it might have something to do with profiles; whether one uses them as they come or creates one (with a different name?)
