I suppose I should have said a few other things, but I didn't think of it. I am using Slackware64 14.1, and apulse 20150103.

The "ugly" method was due to the minor problem that Skype was trying to use my primary sound card for playback and capture. I could hear test calls through my speakers but I have no microphone plugged in to the card.

Other than my additions, the file is the exact file installed by the Slackbuild, all I did was add the exports to specify which devices for apulse to use.

I can't argue with the results, I even get better results with apulse than with Pulseaudio. Under Pulseaudio, I could not record the greeting message for my Skype number. Under apulse, it worked just fine.

Edit to add a line: I did not realize this was a Debian area when I scavenged up the information, I only just realized that now. Sorry if I am off topic here, I was just glad that I got the information I needed to solve my problem.
