Hi,

I have no sound in debian etch even
though I enabled it under preferences > sound.

My default desktop is gnome.

please try to use better titles in future. "sound" is not informative about your problem, and this is a help forum, so no need to say "help"... :)

What sort of hardware are we talking about? Check the specs on your computer (either your manual or online or use "lspci" in a terminal). Without knowing that, it's not so easy to diagnose the problem.
