[SOLVED] Disabled ACPI while installing CentOS; now CentOS only uses 1 of 4 cores

Hi all,

So I'm pretty familiar with Ubuntu, but lately I've been trying to do some stuff for which Ubuntu really won't cut it. I was told that I needed to install CentOS. After a half a day of googling, I finally found a couple of posts where people said that they had to set ACPI=off to get it to install at all. I tried it and it worked great... but now CentOS only uses one of the four cores. I have a Lenovo Thinkpad U430 Touch with Ubuntu and CentOS dual-booted. Any suggestions at all are appreciated!

That is one of the side effects of turning ACPI off. Better to find the underlying problem and see if you can get a fix for that. Turning off ACPI is just to prove you can actually get the box to run at all, not a long term solution.
As a general rule, CentOS (being based on Redhat Enterprise Linux) is more enterprise than "user/laptop" orientated - less likely to support things like touch laptops well.

Yeah, I wasn't expecting CentOS to support the touchscreen at all; I was kind of surprised when it did. I know it's not great for individual users, but for several reasons, it's the only one I can use in this case.

Have you tried removing the ACPI=off from the boot parameters ?. You might find it runs ok.
Just remove it from the boot screen initially as that only affects the current boot - then update the defaults if it's ok.

I got it to work! I changed every instance of acpi=off in /boot/grub2/grub.cfg to acpi=on, and that fixed it. It's using all four cores now. Thanks!

Next time the cfg gets re-generated it'll be back. Have a look in /etc/default/grub.
