Kudos to arch...
 

I just installed it yesterday on my notebook (wombat .7 final)

It was a little bit of a tricky installation, but not too bad.. I also had the help of the guys/girls(one female in particular who helped a bunch with my wireless) in FreeNode IRC #archlinux while I was installing...

I learned a lot about rc.conf and whatnot... Its quite fast, and all the downlaod servers seemed to be quite fast as well.. I have a 4Mbit Cable conection and I was downloading the initial updates at about 445K/s (~3.5Mb)

It's nice and quick, I like all the little changes with the archlinux brandings for the splash screens and whatnot..

Also, the colors in the console are really great... pacman is pretty nice...

It doesn't include a bunch of stuff by default, even choosing everything off the CD... but it does include xine and mplayer.. which is *UBER* cool in itself... I really wish the i586 was working because I would love to stick it on my old Pentium MMX lappy...

I am going to try and make time to do a distro review for it.. after a couple more days of using it...

Kind of reminds me of slackware with good (native)package management... of course, it's not as old as slack or anything.. but that's kind of what is feels like...

I really recommend checking it out... I tried to install it with .6 a while back without success, maybe I was still too much of a newbie.. or maybe something else.. either way.. I'm pretty happy with it..

i was trying arch the other day, but i realised my dl speed was at the rate of 4 to 10kb/s, that is really slow and i lost my patience while waiting for xorg to dl :o . But now seeing you can get 400kb/s, my interest returns. Care to tell me which mirriors did you use for pacman? I still have my 0.7 wombat cd, want to use it for my desktop that has a Compaq WL215 usb wireless adapter, you think this thing will work?

BTW, I have paid for a 180kb/s cable, so i expect to reach that speed, not 4 to 10.

um.. I don't remember for sure what mirrors I was using.. I just commented down a few mirrors.. although.. I am near Chicago and you are near the equator.. so you would not want to use the same mirror as myself anyways.. You might have just hit it at a bad time.. when I downloaded something (can't remember what it was) the downloads were so slow that it was failing repeatedly.. then I tried about an hour and a half later, and got fantastic speeds..

I would say to give it another shot.. If you have more than one PC, check out #archlinux on IRC for help while installing.. good luck

I will try our your recommendations. I dint use netselect, but i tried all of the mirrors and all of them are slow. I reinstall arch last night and it is the same problem....slow. My xorg dl just stalled half way after 3 small files being downloaded. The dl speed was at a paltry 0.3kb/s

I tried arch because of it's famed pacman and optimised binary. As I was a gentoo user, i got a liitle tired with the long compile, so trying out arch now. But never occurs to me arch ftp is so slow, it is just like having gentoo again, but with a twist.:(

I get a consistant ~190-210KB/s when using pacman so I guess maybe it's your connection or you just haven't found the right mirror yet.

Now i am in the office and I am tersting the dl by randomly dowloading some big files from the same mirrors i used last night at home, most of them can hit a hundred or more kb/s. Hmm, looks like it's my network set up problem rather than mirror upload speed then.....

Anyway I can find out? My current prime suspect is my nameserver, I just use the same nameserver ip i picked up from my debian box(another pc) and insert the same ip onto arch's resolv.conf.

How do you connect? I use DHCP so my router handles that for me I wouldn't have a clue :p

sorry to report that I didnt make it in arch slow dl problem. I just lost my cool(or mind?) last night and re install slackware 10.1. I will spend more time googling b4 i put that wombat back onto the cdrom again.

PS:DJ P@CkMaN, yes, i'm on a wireless router. And i use a lan cable during the set up.
