18.0 install fails after partially wiped HD
Hello
Here is my selfmade ;) problem: 1) 4M 16.0 installed on laptop 2) want to update to 18.0 3) Start the "wipe disk" tool from startmenu 4) See that estimated time is 2+ hours. Cancel after 1% 5) Now 16.0 install does not boot anymore (what surprise. but does not matter) 6) The 18.0 installer from CD seems to work at first but then has some errors. http://i.imgur.com/S8LT1cr.png The installs of some addons end with "Killed" Eventually the login-prompt appears but after typing "root" there is a console-prompt that does...nothing. One can just type and press return, but nothing happens? It also behaves strange in that the console randomly scrolls on its own, as if the return-key was stuck. Using the wipe-thing was probally stupid/unnessecary but it seemed like a good idea at the time. Usually I would try to format HD now with win-CD or so, but maybe is another way? |
It was not a good idea to wipe your disk before updating :-)
Wiping a disk means destroying all data on it. The only solution for you is to perform a fresh install from a live CD (or USB). . |
I wanted to wipe disk because the installer from startmenu said:
"This disk already contains an install of 4M" (or similiar text) Lost data does not matter, only the OS was installed. On two other laptops 16.0 is already functioning okay, but this one I wanted to try with 18.0 because of the wlan fixes. Quote:

But the 4MLinux installation script asks you if you wish to format the target partition:

Have you ever tested your script with NO partitions ?. Based on the experience of the OP, it would appear not.

I thought it was 'worth noting' that the install-script starts off ok but then does this "killed" messages/errors? If this is something worth looking at in a way maybe fixes something, then I can try to follow some instructions. :) If it is too strange or not useful, then I will use ultimatebootcd.com and try to format and install clean. |
