Desktop Environment of the Year

If you're looking for Fluxbox, Window Maker, Enlightenment or similar options - they are in the Window Manager of the Year poll.

SteveK1979 12-16-2014 02:32 AM

Be interesting to see how many people selected window manager only if it were an option. I bet there's still a lot out there just running fluxbox or whatever with no desktop environment. :)

Cheers,
Steve

brianL 12-16-2014 02:39 AM

KDE, but do use others for a change now and then.

anticapitalista 12-16-2014 03:01 AM

If I use a desktop environment I use rox on antiX or Xfce on MX-14

qlue 12-16-2014 09:33 AM

lol
Crunchbang doesn't have a Desktop Environment. :P
And I really do not miss having one!

Keith Hedger 12-16-2014 06:08 PM

Been using Xfce for some years now, but I am getting more interested in coding with QT5 than the mortally wounded gtk2 and the never to be touched gtk3, so lxqt looks promising I may switch.

notKlaatu 12-16-2014 08:16 PM

I'm a KDE user when I need a desktop, but Cinnamon is really slick, fairly lightweight, and has really impressed me this past year.

kooru 12-17-2014 06:30 AM

xfce

philipgr 12-17-2014 09:31 AM

Cinnamon is the best

Cinnamon is the most user friendly desktop. Unity and Gnome Shell are the worst desktops around.

Regards
Philip

Fenrin 12-17-2014 10:06 AM

My favourites are MATE and XFCE. Because MATE seems to have more developer activity (and releases) in 2014 compared to XFCE, I vote for MATE.

Apart from these two DE's I also like Gnome Shell, but I hate the new UI design of Gnome default Apps such as the UI design of Gnote, Nautilus, Gedit. It is also stupid that it depends on SystemD and Tracker. On the other hand the extension system is quite nice.

rokytnji 12-17-2014 10:22 AM

XFCE this year.

steeladept 12-17-2014 10:54 AM

Generally work without any GUI, but if I do install one it is almost always Xfce

pedrofleck 12-17-2014 02:05 PM

Gnome shell is perfect, I got totally confused trying to use other DE now, I do everything really fast in GS

wayward4now 12-17-2014 02:09 PM

XFCE. It just works like it oughta.

jamison20000e 12-17-2014 03:50 PM

Mostly KED but: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ove-%3B-99.jpg :D

Iconx 12-18-2014 01:01 PM

KDE seems the most compatible with everything and easiest to use with the most apps, but gnome3 is a quick second.

Second that ;-)

Mik3e 12-18-2014 09:48 PM

More than any other I've used, Mate puts function ahead of style.

cowlitzron 12-18-2014 11:15 PM

I'll go with KDE again. The two best file managers, Dolphin and Konqueror, are integrated in. It is highly configurable. However the default Kwin runs heavy on my 3 GB RAM box, so I prefer to use Openbox. KDE/Openbox works well with Slackware 14.1, but when I tried to use it in Kubuntu 14.04 and Debian 7, the applications disappeared from the KDE menu.

ozar 12-19-2014 11:45 AM

I prefer simple window managers but KDE is my preference for a full blown desktop environment. Of course, I'm hoping that Gnome will be good once again someday.

jamison20000e 12-19-2014 01:02 PM

KDE can do it all. May require the hardware recourses tho? :)

Have to agree with this. XFCE does what I need from a DM and stays out of the way otherwise.

tonymck 12-19-2014 05:38 PM

Hi Jeremy,
Should you include "Enlightenment" (E17 or E18) in the list?

This is answered in post #1.

Myk267 12-19-2014 08:11 PM

Gnome Shell.

I don't think Enlightenment goes under the WM category. There's more to it than just some window trimmings. :)

trava90 12-19-2014 11:26 PM

Cinnamon

Ian_Hawdon 12-20-2014 11:46 AM

Controversial answer from me: Unity

I believe it's matured quite nicely from the initial mess when it was first released. If it was in the official Arch repo, I'd probably switch distro.

Enlightenment is probably the one nominee that is the closest to being in either category. As it started out as a WM (and without EFL still is closer to a WM in our opinion), we've decided to keep it in this category for now.

I only use lightweight DEs, so Unity and KDE is out of the box

jamison20000e 12-21-2014 10:33 PM

microcoughed7 not so lightweight... :D

penguin2233 12-21-2014 10:43 PM

I can't believe how much DEs jamison20000e has

jamison20000e 12-21-2014 11:17 PM

On a newer machine I like the option to do anything, Thanks Linux\GNU\LQ and All*! :D

I also multiboot with lighter options for battery life and such, CLI is grate for learning... ;)

penguin2233 12-21-2014 11:19 PM

I often use Windows XP for stuff that can't run on Linux. It shows 7 because I'm at a public computer.

mrknify 12-23-2014 02:05 PM

Cant vote. Lxdm w/ awesome wm is olnot on the list. :(

Dont troll this comment as that's all it is. I reserve the right to vote on my favorite window manager not you.

Sir Douglas 12-23-2014 02:55 PM

Cinnamon is clean and organized.

Cityscape 12-23-2014 04:06 PM

Cinnamon is honestly the best all-round DE imo! It sticks with a traditional style that most people would easily be able to use (no weird *cough* "Activities" *cough* thing or anything). It's quite stable and quick as well, and can be customized somewhat too. It is very professional looking and well put together. I honestly cannot think of any complaints I have against it, I can't say the same for any other DE. So Cinnamon gets my vote!

Also Mate is a DE worthy of mention too. It is very good and solid. I use it as my main DE on Debian 7, Cinnamon isn't in the repos but it will be in Jessie. I'll almost definitely switch to Cinnamon when Jessie becomes the Stable. And I have always liked LXDE for a lightweight DE, it really does well at being lightweight... even lighter then XFCE.

I just gave my laptop to my nephew for Xmas (wiped it with winblah7  and Mint :)) so now I'm CLI only (Debian-sid) on an IBM T20 (from a thrift store) zoom zoom... :D

J5lx 12-27-2014 08:49 AM

For a very long time I only used GNOME, but discovering Enlightenment truly enlightened me :) Everything is customizable, and it looks awesome while still being fast. Looking back at the past I'm unable to tell how I survived using GNOME :) In my opinion it's a full-fletched DE.

Rubian 12-27-2014 11:34 AM

Manjaro Cinnamon.

Quite the laugh at the spelling, as it tends to feel like your being grated, when your learning the great command line.;)

I've used several and I would like to be better at several, but they are mostly used for things such as internet access or things that require x.
Currently I tend to use either LXDE or Enlightenment, but I used to like Fluxbox quite a bit for older systems.

weirdwolf 12-28-2014 02:36 PM

Still using LXDE

pcninja 01-03-2015 07:49 PM

Xfce for the win.

I would never, ever, ever, ever use GNOME. it is always buggy and unstable. <pessimistic speculation>Too bad it will be forced on to us by the end of the year.</pessimistic speculation>

I agree with your sentiments. I switched from Ubuntu to Linux Mint because the Cinnamon desktop imo is currently the best desktop. I would rate Zorin's Win 7 type desktop as the second best. I liked your 85% virus line. It is so very true. It brought a smile to my face.

Bller 01-04-2015 07:52 AM

Im using MATE 1.8 on a MSI WindU90x netbook 1 GB RAM and 1.6 Atom CPU with debian 8 jessie and 3.18.1 kernel and it is relatively smooth for what i need. Thinking on trying MoonLightDE for a spin, i kinda like the overall vibe of it :D

jamison20000e 01-04-2015 07:58 AM

Whoops, moved. (Although DE\WM\'s* too...

enorbet 01-04-2015 01:20 PM

I'd really like to know if any Slackers are using any of the new KDE releases that have killed off "The Evil Three"? and what is your opinion of what has taken their place?

brashley46 01-05-2015 02:40 PM

Xfce on my Xubuntu desktop, but my "new" used netbook is running LinuxMint Cinnamon and I like that too.

disciplepup 01-05-2015 05:58 PM

LXDE (the GTK version).

plubius3 01-05-2015 07:25 PM

I use Linux mint with Cinnamon.
Everything just works
