I used ROX on Vector Linux for a default desktop for a couple of years. It functioned very well. No bloat, very easy and intuitive to use.

No spot in the poll for twm ... Always a bride's maid, never a bride.

It is the only DE included with every single distribution that has X ...

mk27 02-01-2011 02:38 PM

None of the above?

I think you should have a "All DE's suck" choice for those who believe that "Integrated Desktop Environments" are just plain a very silly and un-unix like idea.

It's not a DE, it's a WM (window manager). Window managers are a necessity, and a good window manager is a beautiful thing. "Desktop Environments" are not a necessity if you use a nice fully functional WM, and DEs in general are a classic example of colossal bloatware, derived from the assumption that users are stupid but still need to be dumbed down further. DEs cannot be beautiful because they are too fat and ridiculous ;)

FVWM2 forever!!

Wow, thank you! I was not expecting that, since I'm sure Trinity-DE is on very few people's radar.

Too bad I can't change my vote, I picked Xfce as my choice of those listed.

I've been using Trinity-DE since November, and I must say I'm relatively pleased, but it's still just playing catch-up without enough developers to fix the left-over bugs from KDE3.5 days.

crazypenguin 02-02-2011 01:46 AM

I haven't heard must about Trinity DE in the mainstream. It sure seams like it isn't get much recognition. It is too bad as I really liked KDE v. 3.5. And I am not a big fan of KDE 4.5. I have been favoring Xfce over the other desktops since the KDE 3.5 days.

xfce seems to have the best combination of features and responsiveness. I'm looking forward to 4.8 when it hits the Debian/Ubuntu repos. My second vote would go to gnome, which to me has the best combination of features and design.

Same here, if only they would stop shooting themselves in the foot.

Was a gnome fan. But KDE 4 is awesome. My vote is totally for KDE. I love it in Fedora 14. It is a very beautiful thing1

braintooth 02-02-2011 06:55 PM

I like Gnome and Xfce but I am going to have to go with Xfce due to speed, and less running in the background.

weirdwolf 02-04-2011 08:02 PM

LXDE. The more I use it the more I like it.

HazMat117 02-05-2011 07:00 PM

I always use gnome distros on my desktop PCs. Had to give it to KDE though, I can not believe how far KDE has come since KDE 4 dropped. The boys at gnome can take a few notes from them if they want, wink wink.

I think KDE looks good and provides a unified desktop experience, but it looks and feels too much like Vista for my liking. (And it also comes with some of the Windows crashy stupidness)

It may be nice but it also has the most bugs of any DE.
