Tremulous?

nighthawk808 12-31-2007 09:59 PM

Wormux is good, but it's not out of beta, so there is no single-player mode yet unless you want to play both sides yourself. I'd still vote for it if it was on the list, though.

seanj 01-01-2008 12:56 AM

Nexuiz didn't make it in?

jumico 01-01-2008 02:05 AM

I think nexuiz may not be completely open source.

Darkhack 01-01-2008 10:34 AM

Planeshift is a game I've been watching for the past couple of years now. I don't know if it can be included or not for a couple of reasons. Although Planeshift's source code is under the GPL, all graphics and sounds and such are proprietary (though free as in beer) and the game is only alpha quality. I'm just throwing it out as a suggestion, but it might be debatable because of these reasons.

why the poll is closed??

amaroKer 01-01-2008 04:54 PM

I nominate Astromenace by Viewizard. Great game. Just great.

seanj 01-01-2008 05:29 PM

Thanks for adding Nexuiz!

zeno0771 01-01-2008 08:32 PM

Frets On Fire.
I personally don't play the game but my kids are all over it. What I like the most is that G**t*r H*r* songs (being .ogg files) work in it, and the mods happening for this thing show how one can be current and stay true to open source (well, as close as one can get in this case anyway)

Guv 01-01-2008 09:51 PM

Hi, I do not know what these games mentioned are about. Are they sims, rpgs, strategy, action, multi-player or what???
I'm asking because most games I've run across lately are boring..same old, same old. I'm wondering what other people are interested in playing.
I would like to write a game where others could add modules to it and be compatible, genre etc. However, not knowing what people are looking for in the way of game entertainment, it makes it a little tenuous at best.

As an aside: I'm surprised there were no votes on Jeremy's "What programming language do you prefer"?
Is it that people don't program, except for commercial resale?

Guvvy.

jumico 01-01-2008 11:44 PM

To find out what the games are about use google.

Here is a good list of what some are interested in playing
http://rangit.com/software/top-8-linux-games-of-2007/

There are no votes because none of the polls are open.

ddik 01-02-2008 01:45 PM

Armagetron Advanced? This tron remake is one of most addicting games ever IMHO.

jumico 01-02-2008 02:52 PM

World of Padman is a great game not many people no about. It uses the quake III engine.

AGazzaz 01-03-2008 03:09 PM

I think you should consider x-moto

{BBI}Nexus{BBI} 01-04-2008 07:30 AM

Foobillards :)

Storm16 01-04-2008 09:21 AM

A couple of more...

Beyond the Red Line, a Battlestar Galactica space flight sim based on the Freespace engine.

UFO: Alien Invasion, a turn-based strategy game similar to the old XCOM UFO series.

Danger From The Deep, a WWII U-boat simulator.

JLP 01-04-2008 09:41 AM

Hard to decide between FreeCiv and Wesnoth (if I don't count our own Thousand Parsec :)). But I guess I play FreeCiv the most of the two and so my vote goes to it.

asimba 01-04-2008 12:52 PM

I am in for GNU chess any day - any time :)

anticapitalista 01-04-2008 01:01 PM

Torcs!

http://torcs.sourceforge.net

GPL'ed too.

speedygeo 01-04-2008 01:56 PM

I vote for torcs too!!!

Qual 01-04-2008 03:09 PM

This one is too hard to vote on; so no vote, but great section still (YS Flight would be my vote, yet not Open :( )

Good Riddance 98 01-04-2008 03:57 PM

Although quite buggy, I love SuperTuxCart.

I also love OpenArena.

I like X-Motto even though it really is to difficult to be really fun.

Alien_Hominid 01-05-2008 02:55 AM

Been playing Nexuiz several months ago while still had some free time. Great game.

nikhilsinha 01-05-2008 07:01 AM

lbreakout

Can you please include the game "lBreakOut2"?
Not voting right now!

Kensai 01-07-2008 07:51 AM

I love Tremulous, but I have to say Battle of Wesnoth is awesome. So Wesnoth is my pick.

Mega Man X 01-07-2008 08:44 AM

I voted for Nexuiz, pretty good shooter. It was a tough call though... I like SuperTux a lot: Brings me back good memories from the classic Mario, but well, with Tux :D.

Torcs is a game with great potential as well. Graphically, it is not very impressive, but I don't really care about that. What I personally don't like with Torcs is the way the car turns... one little step outside the track regardless of your speed will make your car go wild. It also feels like the cars weight is way off (too light) and it shows often when you turn and the road is not completely plane. This is definitely a project I will be looking in the future.

I believe TuxRacer is dead? No? Their page has not been updated for a very long time. There are other projects around, like Extreme Tuxracer which are build upon TuxRacer before TuxRacer went commercial. Well, at least I think it is dead.

I should give FlightGear another shot as well. Been getting into MS Flight Simulator again lately :)

Good Riddance 98 01-07-2008 11:47 AM

I am glad Tux Racer is dead, death to the traitor. It is like making a game staring the GNU and releasing it under DRM.

I like PPRacer a Tux Racer derivative.

anticapitalista 01-07-2008 05:05 PM

Can you add torcs to the list? I demand my vote!

theriddle 01-07-2008 05:28 PM

I wish I could vote for more than one... but I vote frozen-bubble. The most original, super-fun/addictive game ever known to open-source.

I never heard of PPRacer. Thanks for the tip. I was kinda sad when TuxRacer went commercial as well. There were many improvements on their enhanced version though. Personally, I've nothing against paying money for software, but when a project starts under one free license and then goes totally commercial is kinda weird. All they did in the long run was to kill the game.

It is confirmed though. TuxRacer is dead. Their pages has not been updated since 2004 and tuxracer.org is officially Cybersquatted. Open Racer is also dead and PlanetPenguin changed its name to Extreme TuxRacer. So basically, from the list in this pool, the only game that could get votes is actually TuxRacer, unless it somehow makes sense to vote for a dead 2004 game as the best open source game for 2007 :)

Lobais 01-09-2008 11:53 AM

Isn't LBreakout kinda dead?
I'd love to see some newer games on the list. Many applications seam to be the same appearing in those fora every year.

Personally I'd vote for PyChess, which is a very nifty gtk chess interface.

Lobais 01-09-2008 11:54 AM

Also, as free engines like Glaurung, Fruit, Toga and Crafty are so much stronger than GnuChess, why is just GnuChess chosen?

SCerovec 01-09-2008 11:56 AM

I can't believe there isn't http://www.lbz3d.com/ on the list!
all try immediately!
BEWARE it's addictive and dual player!
My favorite is the old lbz, but the lbz3d has more advanced features.
a shame!
no vote from me except for lbz!

jumico 01-10-2008 12:24 AM

This isn't open source but I think urban terror is the best free game out there.
http://www.urbanterror.net/news.php
It's similar to counterstrike but i actually like it better.

Are you sure about that?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puzzle_Bobble

Either way, yes... It's a very good remake of the original puzzle bobble and whatnot, and the online play is a nice touch. I think they could have mixed it up a bit and not be a full on remake of Puzzle Bobble... (Seriously, would gameplay variants hurt too much?)

hex1a4 01-14-2008 09:27 AM

Please add Blob Wars 2

Appearantly, they wanted well-seasoned players of Puzzle-Bobble to be well-seasoned players of Frozen-Bubble too.

Okay, I guess it wasn't a very original game, but it is addictive :).

micro$oft 01-15-2008 10:28 AM

Battle for Wesnoth by miles!

djib 01-15-2008 03:02 PM

Hello,
Could you add OpenArena?

nuitei 01-16-2008 03:14 PM

no Warsow? please add it.

I like it's graphics and it's fast!

Worksman 01-16-2008 04:15 PM

Urban Terror 4.1

munkie_poo 01-20-2008 09:29 PM

netpanzer, warzone and neverball.

Mega Man X 01-21-2008 08:35 AM

I have just tried Battle for Wesnoth. While the gameplay is not my cup of tea, I must say that presentation-wise, this game is far above most open-sourced games I've played. Music, graphics, gameplay, stability, portability... everything is top notch here.

I better learn how to play it :)

PatrickNew 01-31-2008 11:49 PM

What no Cube? I would think a fully-capable, modern, high powered first person shooter would make the list. Now, it doesn't have *all* the polish of Halo, but frankly it's not far behind. Plays like a Quake-improved.

+1

Cube, Sauerbraten and AssaultCube are great games. Cube is especially good for low end machines as it's really fast and Sauerbraten is great if you have a PC with reasonable performance (i.e. something more powerful than Intel GMA graphics).

And where is Blobby Volley2???????? Surely the greatest game ever created.

Also I love GNU Backgammon, definitely deserves a place on the list.

sriram_16a 02-01-2008 06:15 AM

Wesnoth is a bit of a learning curve! But grapx are astounding. Y r all other equally-good-in-grafx so grapfx-card hungry?
