Audio Media Player Application of the Year

A new category this year.

raskin 12-30-2006 04:01 PM

Funny, but I use command-line mplayer and feed it with list of arguments. Maybe it could be added in this poll also?

jeremy 12-30-2006 04:09 PM

mplayer classifies themselves as a "movie player". While it does play audio, we'll keep it solely in the video category.

I've really become a fan of amaroK lately. I'll have to give it my vote because I did use it a lot in 2006 and enjoy it. XMMS is a tough omission for me because I do use it a lot but really only for a quick sound here or there.

mpg123 is a nice toy... :)

raskin 12-31-2006 03:06 AM

OK, now that I have no chance to vote for mplayer, I propose TiMidity - software renderer for MIDI.

technomeister 12-31-2006 09:03 AM

no Audacious?

osor 12-31-2006 10:40 AM

I think we should distinguish between xmms and xmms2 (the former of which is almost ubiquitous but now unmaintained, the latter of which is in “alpha” — they’re definitely run by two different types of users).

no Audacious?
ditto ......

jeremy 12-31-2006 11:24 AM

Audacious added. XMMS2 would seem to me to simply be the next generation or version of XMMS.

raskin 12-31-2006 11:47 AM

And TiMidity++?

jeremy 12-31-2006 12:02 PM

Doesn't look like there has been a release of TiMidity++ since 2004.

raskin 12-31-2006 12:27 PM

Simply it is perfect as console MIDI player/converter...

puntjuh 12-31-2006 03:48 PM

Amarok has never let me down yet, so i vote Amarok!

frob23 12-31-2006 06:30 PM

How about cmus? I swear by it.

Hitboxx 12-31-2006 06:40 PM

Show me one like Amarok!! Go Amarok go :D

otchie1 12-31-2006 07:44 PM

like it or not, i also use mplayer from the cli as my audio app 'cos it works. It's also my podcast client of choice and stream grabber of choice - it even handles realplayer files. So far as I can tell none of the options can do all that but to be honest as mplayer does it so well I've never bothered to look for a replacement.

stingo 12-31-2006 08:06 PM

amarok has improved a lot!

FredGSanford 12-31-2006 11:20 PM

xmms is my main one, along with a few others.

TruongAn 01-01-2007 05:41 AM

I vote for rhythmbox.
It's fast and it can manage my library well

Niko 01-01-2007 10:44 AM

Amarok seems has few failures but it's the best as it meets all my requirements.. xmms did do that, but xmms is getting old and grumpy, better let him rest in peace!

JLP 01-01-2007 08:32 PM

Amarok

This is an easy one. Still Amarok. Hands down the best music player I have ever used (even if I count the dark ages of Windows). Integration with last.fm, Wikipedia and Magnatune are great. User interface is also just right.

rentonj7 01-01-2007 10:41 PM

Gotta vote for Banshee

Ha1f 01-01-2007 10:46 PM

cmus, definately. The only thing Ive found to replace orpheus.

dhlippert 01-02-2007 12:21 AM

Amarok gets my vote since Exaile isn't an option.
Wish I had either of those available for the Windows box

-Dave

fcaraballo 01-02-2007 03:03 AM

XMMS. My need are simple and it still gets the job done.

diilbert 01-02-2007 05:33 AM

Auduacious (I can't spell it). It is a leap ahead of XMMS and is a wild ride.

sadiqdm 01-02-2007 06:11 AM

What about Kaffeine?

el amigo* 01-02-2007 07:24 AM

XMMS because it is basic, and it is the one that works with Streamtuner !

strangevarius 01-02-2007 07:44 AM

i'm using rhythmbox recently, coz it's the default audio player on ubuntu 6.06. but i'll try another players.

Jessii 01-02-2007 09:45 AM

Quod Libet and Exaile are the ones I use all the time, so I voted for GStreamer

LocoMojo 01-02-2007 10:14 AM

AmaroK for me, but if I just need to test a sound or play one song, I use Sox's play from the cli.

munkii 01-02-2007 11:53 AM

can't beat Amarok!

alred 01-02-2007 12:19 PM

since there is xmms but where are gxine and gmplayer ??

//just curious ...

//btw ... i find it interesting that gstreamer appears in both video and audio balloting ...

.

raskin 01-02-2007 12:23 PM

Read all the thread.. gmplayer is not here since it names itself as movie player.

alred 01-02-2007 12:28 PM

hmm ... guess that those guys are just being humble ...

so ... i'm narrowed down to xmms and gstreamer ...

.

Zibi1981 01-02-2007 12:39 PM

AmaroK is my choice. Firstly it looked kinda clumsy to me. I've always used Winamp, and amaroK didn't impress me at the begining. But now I like this player much.

betamaxman 01-02-2007 12:45 PM

Amarok manages my 45 gbs of music just fine.

d0g 01-02-2007 01:24 PM

I guess Beep Media Player means BMPx... if not, BMPx should be in it's place, because it is the best media player I've used. Sure it has it's drawbacks, mainly the huge GUI and the fact that it is kinda in "alpha" stage. But it's Musicbrainz and LastFM integration compensates it all.

Samoth 01-02-2007 03:51 PM

Amarok all the way!

Does my music fine. Gotta love all those cool features.

frob23 01-02-2007 05:55 PM

Yay, cmus made it in. You have to love a terminal based music player which does everything the big-boys do as well. It's like a text mode version of iTunes or something. And it uses vi-style commands.

I can start it up in a screen session, and even if I kill X, my music never stops playing. I can ssh into the computer from another computer across the house and change the song, volume, whatever.

It's a wonderful thing.

The Cello Fellow 01-02-2007 11:01 PM

Exaile!

I like Exaile, it's a new one, pyGTK "clone" of AmaroK. But seeing as that's not on the list, I'll vote for good old XMMS.

vangelis 01-03-2007 05:30 AM

nothing on the known world of software can beat amarok on this category ;)

librano 01-03-2007 01:57 PM

Please add Listen Media Player. Its like Amarok for Gnome.

http://listengnome.free.fr/

Jorophose 01-03-2007 06:29 PM

Audacious is a pretty killer app.

Play AND record music.

XMMS is better for just playing, though.

timothyb89 01-03-2007 08:39 PM

where's VLC?
:)

ephemeros 01-03-2007 09:13 PM

i don't understand why VLC is not listed here! i voted XMSS JUST because i used it just before discovering vlc and it also has a last.fm plugin.

xenocoder 01-04-2007 12:11 AM

Amarok, took some serious fussing to get it to run in SUSE 10.0 out of the box, (Darn you Helix engine!) but once up I've never looked back. Even iTunes lacks features Amarok has...

Zero_DOgg 01-04-2007 04:43 AM

No Exaile?

whb 01-04-2007 05:09 AM

How about Listen?
It's a GTK AmaroK-ish music management + playing prog for GNOME

uid0 01-04-2007 05:18 AM

xmms2

i refuse to vote for any of those...
