Toughie. Firefox is the coolest just because of extensions alone, but I find myself using links a lot for slashdot, and konqueror a lot for its integration.

Wow, Konqueror got more votes than Opera?

I use Firefox.

I was thinking the exactly same thing :). It was no surprise for me that Firefox won (not my favorite browser though), but Opera really scored low. And there are peoples out there using Netscape? :confused:

Sadly yes... As neither Opera nor Konqueror emulate NS's or IE JavaScript engines... My bank only recognizes NS or IE, I've tried to identify Opera as IE (no dice, the scripts simply won't run) and also have tried with Konqueror (same thing). Konqueror actually does a better job at emulating NS 7.x, but still can't get the scripts to run, some hacks I made were able to have Firefox to actually run the scripts, but sadly that versoin of Firefox is long gone and lost in an upgrade, I can't remember how I did it, so I'm forced to run either IE (which I'll never do) or NS from a local installation (not system-wide, only for the offended user). So yeah, I understand people that are still using Netscape.

Why MS Explorer is the most popular browser. People are, on the whole too lazy to change from the window manager default, or they are drawn by trends, in this case Firefox. Does this indicate what type of people are now using Linux ? Sad !

The most awful truth I see with the case of my bank is that they far from helping their customers have a safer Net banking experience, are contributing at perpetuating the use of an inherently insecure browser as IE is. I don't have anything againgt them using IE if they want, but I do have grievances by them not allowing the use of something more robust as Firefox, Opera, etc. Pretty much all software products are succeptible of suffering security issues and bugs (their virtually inevitable), but programmers can always improve and try their best not to introduce security holes of any kind or bugs (that's why there are beta testing periods)... But I can't abide companies that will simply refuse to support better alternatives with the argument "IE still has the larger market share" And I always think "Yes, they do because of lack of support from sites like you!" (amongst other things).

One thing is clear, though. As people is getting more concious about the inherent problems that are associated with the Web, solutions and alternatives have been put in place, which are showing to be quite successful at drawing users and increasing the overall awareness of problems. The same thing is happening with the Operating Systems, and while true, we (old time Linux/Unix users) can't turn our backs on these new users and IMO should help them develop the necessary skills to successfully use the systems to their fullest. They don't need to become sysadmins or system's experts, but at least comprehend what is going on with their systems and to solve a handful of problems on their own, but that's topic for another discussion.

Actually, I've been running IE7 on my Wintendo box at work. Not bad, but it really still lacks some of the cool features of Firefox - the tabbed browsing is awkward at best, the "find" feature is really cool in firefox (how it highlights the word searched and doesn't put a pop-up dialog to enter the string being searched. Other than that IE7 is....



...mostly harmless.

Of course, it doesn't run natively on a real OS so I probably won't use it much.

You must get a lot of complains about that in your bank, I guess. I have one account in a online bank and it worked fine with Firefox. Well, if Firefox gets more market share they may need to support Firefox. It's funny that to surf the web, we use safe(r) browsers such as Firefox or Opera, but when doing really import things, such as paying bills or accessing banks, we have to use the buggiest browser ever made.

I find that just as hilarious as Linux and Windows: When using Linux, a very secure OS, we are never the root user. In Windows, arguably a not secure OS out of the box, everybody is the root (administrator). Oh well :D

Konqueror is a great multifunctional program. Superior to Firefox, though? Just my opinion, but I hardly think so. I wonder if everyone that voted for it, just failed to install another browser. It would definately be the best, if that's all you had.

I voted for Konqueror, I love it, and also I've tried other browsers. I've tried Mozilla, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera, Netscape browser, lynx, Galeon, Epiphany, Dillo, and even Amaya. The only famous browser I haven't tried is Safari since I don't have Mac. Now in my Linux box I only have Konqueror and Firefox, and in windows I have Firefox and IE (but of course I always use firefox in windows).

Why do I love Konqueror:
- It's integrated with my desktop, example: to read a pdf document I just need to middle click (open in new tab) and I don't need to have a new window for the pdf reader application. And also kaffeine part in konqueror is very nice (I think firefox also can embed some applications, but not as straightforward as Konqueror does)
- It's very fast, when you start the application itself and when you browse webpages.
- Konqueror has all features I want, Adblock, popup blocker, mouse gesture, rss feed, and many others
- the Kget download manager

I still miss full gmail support in konqueror, but I know that's because gmail does not want to support it. And I still need firefox to access my internet banking website.

However, this is a free world, if I love Konqueror and you don't, that's fine. I just want to point out that Konqueror users also have tried other browsers ;)

Galeon. It's the only browser I know of that can put the tabs on the side. There's more horizontal room than vertical room on a computer screen. I can't bear to use a browser that can't position tabs like this.

My point was that it was an unfair comparison. For the record, the worst thing I said about Konqueror, was that it was still a good program.

I have a plugin installed that will let me view PDF in the browser as well, even as HTML. The mplayer plugin along with a few codecs installed, and there isn't a video on the internet I can't watch. Yes, within Firefox.

I don't think you mentioned much that Firefox couldn't do. What a program can and can't do is fact. Anything beyond that is opinion.

If it came down to one or the other, of course I would choose Konqueror. Strictly as an internet browser, I think Firefox is the better of the two. Once again, just opinion.

I also agree that Firefox is a very good browser, and I like it ;) I didn't mean to start flamewar between Konqueror and Firefox fans as I also a firefox fan :D, just want to share why I prefer Konqueror over Firefox in Linux. (I also know that one of the best things from FF is it's plugins and extensions, sorry for my previous comment regarding this issue). Cheers :)
